Experts say clutter can seriously harm mental health, creating stress and anxiety. Studies show women in cluttered homes produce more stress hormones. Clutter often stems from emotional attachments or guilt over unused items and can become overwhelming, especially for families. At the extreme, hoarding is linked to deeper emotional needs and childhood trauma. Experts recommend starting small, tackling one drawer at a time and stress that decluttering isn’t just about tidiness but improving mental wellbeing. As co-host of The Declutter Hub Podcast Ingrid Jansen says, “More space in your home means more space in your head.”
