Trams collide in Strasbourg - 68 people have been injured after two trams collided in Strasbourg in eastern France on Saturday. Authorities say that nobody was critically injured but many were assessed for shock or stress. The accident occurred during the afternoon in a tunnel leading to the city’s central train station. Emergency services deployed 130 firefighters, 50 rescue vehicles and established a wide safety perimeter. The exact cause of the collision was unclear but local media reported that one of the trams was reversing at the time. Strasbourg, the first big French city to reinstate tram services, in 1994, had not experienced a significant tram accident until now. Cleanup operations continued on Saturday evening, and people were advised to avoid the area around the train station.

Mayotte hit by more heavy rains - Just one month after Cyclone Chido the French Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte has been hit by further heavy rains, leading to flooding and mudslides. Mayotte has been placed on the highest state of alert as another storm passed by on Sunday morning. Authorities warned of violent winds, flash floods and landslides.

Monaco’s minister of state to undergo medical treatment - The Palace in Monaco has said that Minister of State Monsieur Didier Guillaume will have to undergo medical treatment requiring a scheduled hospitalization that will not allow him to exercise his functions as Minister of State during the coming weeks. In a press release the Palace said that, as of 10 January, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II entrusts the interim functions of Minister of State to Madame Isabelle Berro-Amadei, who is Government Counsellor-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. During this interim period, Madame Berro-Amadei remains in charge of her department. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II extended his "most sincere wishes for a speedy recovery" to Monsieur Guillaume.

Lignes d’Azur - Lignes d'Azur buses are to be transformed into a taxi service. Since Sunday 12th January the Lignes d'Azur travel network is setting up personalized bus routes in Nice with the "Le dimanche à la carte" service. All you have to do is book your slot. The new "le dimanche à la carte" service targets several neighbourhoods of the city. Users will thus be able to request to be picked up at a specific time on the route of certain regular bus lines. The principle already exists with “lines à la carte. To take advantage of this new service, you must book your journey. “At the earliest 14 days in advance and up to the last minute (subject to availability)”, indicates the Lignes d’Azur website. Several ways are possible: on the internet in the "Sunday à la carte" section, on the application, or by phone at 0800 006 007, Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Work on the extension of the Promenade du Paillon - Due to the extension of the Promenade du Paillon in Nice the Place Yves-Klein will be closed to traffic from today through until June.  The work to extend the Promenade du Paillon is entering a new phase: the start of the landscaping of the Promenade des Arts and the Jardin Sosno parking areas, which aim to modernize and secure the infrastructure, while strengthening the green spaces.

Roger Thiberville’s never once visited the Normandy town that gave him his last name. Descended from a family of vineyard owners, he inherited property in Paris from his parents and worked as a meteorologist. But when Thiberville died in August at the age of 91 leaving no descendants, the mayor of the town (population 1,773) received a phone call. Thiberville, the man, had left Thiberville, the town, most of his estimated €10m (£8.4m) fortune.

Firefighters in Los Angeles are still trying to contain the wildfires which burned for the sixth straight day on Sunday. At least 24 people have died in what California Governor Gavin Newsom said could be the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history, one that has destroyed thousands of homes and forced 100,000 people to evacuate. Mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted for four out of the six fires affecting Los Angeles. Highs winds were forecast on Sunday night local time and are expected to last until Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department has warned scammers "are actively targeting vulnerable individuals and families, exploiting their distress" in the aftermath of the wildfires. They warned of several types of scams in a social media post, including false job offers, scammers pretending to be government employees asking for payments and phone and text message scams asking for donations for fire recovery or to help those affected by the fires.

Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos will today watch the launch of Blue Origin's New Glenn, a 30-storey tall rocket that is expected to chip away at SpaceX's market dominance and kick start Blue Origin's long-delayed entrance in the satellite launch business. Speaking from Florida Bezos said he does not think SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will use his close ties with US President-elect Donald Trump to undercut his space company Blue Origin, adding he feels "very optimistic" about the incoming administration's space agenda.

And - According to new research in the UK the proportion of 25 to 34-year-olds living with their parents has risen by more than a third in just under two decades. Last year, the share of the age group living at home was almost a fifth (18%), up from 13% in 2006. Men were more likely than women to be living at home, 23% against 15%.

Football – In the FA Cup on Sunday Tottenham scrambled past non-league Tamworth after extra time beating them 3-0.

Tennis – Its day two of the Australian Open Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper as well as defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner are all in action today. Britain’s Jodie Burrage claimed an emotional first round win at Melbourne Park.

Formula One - The new Formula 1 boss at Aston Martin Andy Cowell is to also take on the role of team principal in addition to his position as chief executive officer. The 55-year-old joined Aston Martin in October.

Athletics - European Under-23 champion Rory Leonard has knocked six seconds off the British men's 10km record set by Mo Farah. Leonard ran a time of 27 minutes 38 seconds at the Valencia 10km. But that was only enough to finish 15th on a 10km course widely regarded as one of the fastest on the international road circuit.

Cycling - Britain's Tom Pidcock says he will not contest this year's Tour de France. The 25-year-old left told reporters "We'll have a year out from the Tour and try to get to the Tour in 2026.”
