Chaos at Nice airport due to poor weather - There has been chaos at Nice airport after flights were cancelled or diverted due to poor weather conditions on Thursday. The weather conditions disrupted air traffic at Nice International airport. According to the airport westerly winds and low cloud forced planes to land on the city side. As a result, most of the evening's flights were diverted. Ten were redirected to Marseille or Montpellier fifteen others were cancelled.

Hospital in Nice closes one of its services due to attack on nurses - The Pasteur Hospital in Nice has closed its neurosurgery service after an assault on two nurses. According to the hospital two nurses were attacked by family members of patients admitted to the service. Since the incident eight out of the eleven nurses which make up the service have been on sick leave, leaving it understaffed.

Local MP says the only answer is “prison or plane” - Alpes Maritimes MP Eric Ciotti has said that “the only answer is prison or plane”. Ciotti made the comment on the difficulties of removing foreign offenders from France whilst visiting a detention centre in Nice on Thursday. His comments come following the tragic murder a 22-year-old student in Paris who was the victim of a Moroccan national already convicted of rape and subject to an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) that was not executed. Ciotti calls for a “simplification of procedures as for him the current process is an obstacle course”.

HSH Prince Albert II Monaco receives the Magna Grecia Prize - HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco has started a two-day visit to Rome. Arriving on Thursday the Prince’s visit will focus on the history of the Italian-Monegasque friendship, culture and the environment. Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by the Ambassador of Monaco to Rome Anne Eastwood. During the day Prince Albert was awarded the Magna Grecia Award which recognizes his international commitment to protecting the environment and his support for sports and culture. The award also recognizes his efforts to promote Southern Italy through the network of Grimaldi Historic Sites of Monaco.

Voiles de Saint-Tropez - The Voiles de Saint-Tropez get underway tomorrow. A major maritime event featuring around 250 boats and 3,000 crew members from around the world this year it will celebrate its 25th anniversary. On until the 6th of October the event showcases a diverse fleet, from classic 19th-century vessels to modern yachts, with various races and activities throughout the week, both at sea and on land, making it a unique celebration of yachting tradition and innovation. 

New version of French film Emmanuelle – Finally, a new version of the French film Emmanuelle, this time in English, has just been released in France. The new version which was a Golden Lion winner at the recent Venice Film Festival explores female sexuality in a 2024-style. The original which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, was considered at the time “the erotic French film that made soft porn mainstream cinema”.  A the time of its release nearly nine million tickets were sold in France alone, although it was initially banned until a new government was elected in 1974. It was a hit, too, in the US, much of Europe, and in Japan.

Tax authorities in France will collect remaining income tax from nearly 10 million households this week. As every year, the tax authorities began on Thursday, September 26th to collect the balance of income tax for taxpayers whose withholding tax in 2023 was not sufficient to cover the entire amount claimed on the tax return. Nearly 10 million tax households are concerned – these include those who have not adjusted their tax rate after an increase in income or who benefited from an advance of tax credits that was too much last January. The balance will be debited in one go if the amount is less than 300 euros. If it is more than 300 euros, it will be debited in four times, with four direct debits of the same amount that will take place on Thursday, September 26, Friday, October 25, Monday, November 25 and Friday, December 27th.

And - Following the news that he was not invited to the UK government’s International Investment Summit the world's richest person, Elon Musk, has hit back in a post on X writing "I don’t think anyone should go to the UK when they’re releasing convicted paedophiles in order to imprison people for social media posts”. According to reports this week Musk had not been invited due to his social media posts during last month’s riots. Earlier this month, the UK government released some prisoners to reduce prison overcrowding, but no people serving sentences for sex offences were included.

Formula One - Australian Daniel Ricciardo has been replaced at Red Bull by 22-year-old Liam Lawson for the remainder of the 2024 season.35-year-old Ricciardo has been dropped with six races to go because Red Bull management have been unconvinced by his performances.

Tennis - Britain's Jack Draper is through to the Japan Open last 16 following a straight-set win over Mattia Bellucci. World number 20 Draper beat the Italian 6-4 6-2 for his first victory since defeat by Jannik Sinner in the US Open semi-finals earlier this month.

Football – New research has shown that the number of betting adverts during the opening weekend of the Premier League season almost trebled compared to last year. Researchers analysed Premier League coverage in the UK across TV - including pitch side hoardings and shirt logos - as well as radio and social media. They counted more than 29,000 gambling messages, a 165% increase on the opening weekend a year ago.

Meanwhile, in the English Premier League this weekend, tomorrow the lunchtime game with a 1.30pm kick off French time will see Newcastle play at home against Manchester City. In the afternoon matches, Arsenal are at home to Leicester City, Brentford play West Ham, Chelsea face Brighton, Everton play Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest are at home to Fulham and Wolverhampton play Liverpool. On Sunday Ipswich play Aston Villa and Manchester United play Tottenham.
