Curfew imposed in Martinique - A curfew has been imposed on the French Caribbean Island of Martinique after violent protests erupted due to the high cost of living. 14 people were injured, including 11 police officers on Thursday. The 9pm to 5am curfew is an attempt to control the escalating violent clashes and will extend to the 23rd of September. It is intended to protect the population, businesses and restore law and order.

New cabinet choices presented to Macron - French Prime Minister Michel Barnier has presented his new cabinet choices to President Emmanuel Macron. The new premier is attempting to end months of political deadlock following snap elections in July. It is now up to Macron to approve the new cabinet. Barnier’s office said that the government's priorities will include improving the public's purchasing power as well as guaranteeing security, controlling immigration and better managing the public finances.

Monaco police reveal large-scale fraud - Monaco police have charged three people in connection with a large-scale fraud involving the registration of luxury vehicles using Monegasque license plates. Two of the suspects have been placed in provisional detention, while the third is under judicial supervision. The formal investigation launched in September of last year uncovered a sophisticated scheme in which individuals with no actual ties to Monaco were registering their luxury vehicles in the Principality. This allowed them to evade environmental penalties abroad and avoid certain road traffic offences.

Strike action - Laboratories in the Var and the Alpes Maritimes will be closed today Friday 20th September, due to strike action. More than 97% of laboratories in France are expected to take part in the action against the price of scientific testing being dropped by 10%. Their doors will remain closed through until Tuesday morning.

Donation - In their mission to support vulnerable children, CFM Indosuez Wealth Management, in partnership with Crédit Agricole CIB, has donated over 51,000 euros to the Flavien Foundation and the Monaco Scientific Center. The funds will support the “Stem Cells and Brain Tumours” research team, led by Dr. Vincent Picco, at the Monaco Scientific Centre. The collaboration between CFM Indosuez and Crédit Agricole CIB, a leader in the green and sustainable bond market, underscores their shared dedication to health causes.

European Heritage Days - Finally, the European Heritage Days in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes are being held this weekend allowing you to discover many sites that are usually closed to the public. The weekend offers free visits to museums, castles and other famous homes known or unknown a programme is available at your local tourist office.

US President Joe Biden has said that he expects the Federal Reserve to continue cutting interest rates and vowed that his administration would keep working to lower costs for Americans. Biden was promoting his administration's policies to bring down inflation after the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, key issues for voters in the upcoming presidential elections.

Entertainment giants Lionsgate have announced a partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) company Runway to allow a new AI model to be trained on their extensive film and TV archive. Lionsgate, the studios behind series such as The Hunger Games and John Wick, will benefit by being able to use the resulting AI technology in future productions.

And – Elliot Hill is to succeed John Donahoe as president and CEO of Nike. The move comes as the sportswear giant shakes up its leadership amid efforts to revive sales and battle rising competition. The company's shares rose 8% in after-hours trading. Hill was at Nike for 32 years and held senior leadership positions across Europe and North America where he helped expand the business to more than $39 billion.

Football - Arsenal drew 0-0 against Italian side Atalanta in their Champions League opener. Meanwhile Monaco beat Barcelona 2-1.

Golf – The PGA of America has announced that golfers who play on the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV Golf tour will be allowed in the United States Ryder Cup team. LIV players will also be able to compete at the PGA Championship.

Tennis – Wimbledon has received a boost to its plans to build 39 new tennis courts. Officers at the Greater London Authority (GLA) have recommended the Deputy Mayor should grant conditional planning permission at a public hearing next Friday.
