A Lignes d'Azur bus driver was reportedly attacked with tear gas during a robbery as he started work this morning. According to the city of Nice, the incident happened at about 7am this morning at Saint-Laurent-du-Var. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi expressed his support for the driver and said that "severe sanctions must be imposed for such acts".

About 120 traveler families are set to arrive in Saint-Laurent-du-Var after a court rejected an appeal by local authorities. The Alpes Maritimes Prefect had issued a decree requisitioning four hectares of land to accommodate the travelers on a temporary basis. An appeal was filed by the municipality of Saint-Laurent-du-Var, which was rejected by the Administrative Court in Nice.

Four people have escaped with only minor injuries after their car fell 150 meters into a ravine. The car and its occupants were traveling along the road between Cassis and Marseille in the Bouches-du-Rhone this morning when the vehicle left the road. The local fire brigade said that about 30 of its staff had attended the incident along with 15 vehicles. The occupants of the car suffered slight injuries.

There have been disruptions to Eurostar services between London and Paris this afternoon because of the theft of cables near Lille. Eurostar have said that services are now gradually returning to normal but there are still delays. The SNCF, who have been carrying out repair works, said that it had been the subject "of a major act of vandalism". It said that 600 meters of cable were stolen.

A major operation by French immigration authorities resulted in the arrest of almost 700 people in an irregular situation. The operation last week reportedly involved over 4,600 officers who boarded over 1,200 trains. Speaking to French media, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said that 47,000 illegal immigrants had been arrested since the beginning of the year.

Several unions representing staff at motorway operator Vinci Autoroutes have announced industrial action over the summer. However, unions have said that there will be little impact on motorway users since most toll booths are now automated.

59 French departments are on Meteo France Orange level alerts for storms today, including most departments in the north of the country as well as central and south-western areas.

It's been announced that His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco will travel to Japan on the occasion of Monaco's National Day, celebrated on June 28, as part of the World Expo 2025 in Osaka Kansai. The Palace said that Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene was due to accompany the Prince to Japan, together with Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella. However, in light of current events taking place in the Middle East, this has led to the decision that Her Serene Highness and the Princely children would not be participating in the trip. Princess Charlene expressed her sincere thanks to the teams of the Monaco Pavilion, as well as to the partners and hosts who were to welcome her in Japan, for their understanding and ongoing commitment.

BUSINESS

Sales of Tesla cars in the European Union have fallen significantly over the past year. The company sold about 8,700 vehicles in May, down from about 14,600 in the same month last year, which is a fall of around 40%.

The owner of UK supermarket chain Asda recorded a loss of 599 million pounds last year, after a profit of 180 million in 2023. Total sales rose by over one billion pounds, but sales at established stores fell. The company said its finance costs had risen after increases in interest rates.

The UK government reportedly agreed to spend about 500 million pounds on transport and infrastructure to secure the recently announced Universal theme park near Bedford. According to the Financial Times, quoting a government official, the cost includes about 270 million pounds in rail network upgrades and about 200 million on road infrastructure.

 

SPORT

Football... Former England player Adam Lallana has retired from playing. The 37 year old won 34 caps for England. He returned to Southampton last season after playing for the club earlier in his career.

Rugby Union...Hunter Paisami and Matt Faessler have been released by Australia to play for Queensland Reds in their upcoming match against the British and Irish Lions. Six other players have instead stayed with Australia to prepare for their warm-up Test against Fiji.
