NEWS
President Macron will speak of France's goals on Ocean Protection - President Emmanuel Macron will appear on France 2 on the 10th of June for a special evening on ocean protection, linked to the UN ocean conference 2025 in Nice. He will present the conference’s outcomes and reaffirm France’s goals for protecting marine ecosystems. The UN event gathers world leaders, scientists, and NGOs to address the urgent state of the oceans, especially the heavily polluted Mediterranean. The conference aims to adopt an action plan and push for commitments like banning deep-sea mining and combating illegal fishing. Despite global efforts, major powers like the U.S. are not participating, highlighting divisions on ocean policy.

UNOC 2025 - Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference 2025 (UNOC3) in Nice, scientists from France’s Institute of Research for Development (IRD) stress the need to move beyond a resource-driven view of the ocean and advocate urgent, science-based solutions to protect marine ecosystems. The IRD focuses on understanding ocean-climate links, sustainable marine resource use, and the impact of pollution and climate change. Researcher Marie-Christine Cormier-Salem, who, for the past 40 years, has studied societies who rely on mandrakes and mangroves, also highlights the overlooked role of women in mangrove and mandrake ecosystems, especially in the Global South, where millions depend on fishing and shellfish harvesting for survival. She warns of “green imperialism,” where carbon credit schemes often exclude and harm local women by restricting access to traditional fishing areas. Cormier-Salem calls for global recognition of women's rights and contributions to marine conservation, pushing for inclusive, equitable environmental policies.

Elecrticity Cuts this Thursday - Electricity cuts are expected this Thursday, 5th of June due to maintenance work by Enedis in Puget-Théniers, near Nice. The outages may occur between 9:15am and 12:15pm in specific areas such as La Condamine, Le Fraget, and Le Rivet. Affected streets include route de la Condamine, chemin de Lara, and route du Col de Saint-Raphaël. Enedis advises residents to unplug sensitive devices before the outage and wait to reconnect them until power returns. Updates on the situation will be available on the Enedis website.

Vandalism Suspects Arrested - Three people suspected of being involved in throwing green paint at the Shoah Memorial, three synagogues and a Jewish restaurant on Friday night in Paris’ 20th arrondissements have been arrested in Juan-les-Pins, Alpes-Maritimes. The Serbian suspects were reportedly trying to leave France when they were detained. Top French officials visited the defaced memorial, denouncing rising antisemitism and calling for unity. An investigation is underway for religiously motivated vandalism.

Digital Directory for Local Businesses - A new digital directory will launch on the 4th of June to improve visibility for local businesses, especially small ones in Monaco. Created by Ivan Arkhanguelsky, the platform offers free listings with multilingual profiles and personalized support, aiming to go beyond existing directories. Revenue will come from non-intrusive advertising and optional paid services like audits and profile management. The platform will start as a mobile-friendly website, with an app planned later. Its goal is to list at least 1,000 companies, helping them gain exposure in Monaco’s competitive business scene.

Monaco's Fire Brigade new Insignia - Monaco's fire brigade has received a new official insignia on the 19th of May. Although the corps was created in 1909, its first insignia only appeared in 1949 under Prince Rainier III and was updated once in 1958. The current change was initiated in 2022, as the previous design closely resembled that of French firefighters. A formal ceremony was held in May 2025 to present the new insignia. This update symbolizes identity and belonging within the Monegasque fire service.

Voiles d'Antibes - The Voiles d’Antibes returns from the 4th-8th of June for its 30th edition, celebrating vintage and classic sailing yachts. Held at the Bastion Saint-Jaume, the event features over 80 historic boats, exhibitions, concerts, and even vintage motorboats. New highlights include a classical music concert, a panoramic terrace space, and an Alpine Renault car parade on Saturday. Visitors can enjoy races, meet sailors, attend eco-friendly cultural events, and explore the “living museum” of navigation. All activities are free (except food and drinks), with races and entertainment happening daily throughout the port of Antibes.

Monaco Supports Sick Children - During the Monaco Grand Prix, around 20 sick children have watched the F1 trials from a rooftop with a perfect view, thanks to the Monaco Liver Disorder (MLD) association. They received a surprise visit from Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène on the 23rd of May, who took time to speak with them. This initiative was also supported by M Agency and Crown Luxury Group, offering children a break from their medical routines. MLD continues its mission beyond the Grand Prix, including a fundraising bike ride from Monaco to Andorra on the 30th of May. The royal couple made several appearances throughout the event, supporting sick children, people with disabilities, and Red Cross volunteers.

D'AQUI - Franck Ballestra, founder of the restaurant D’AQUI, is celebrating 10 years since opening his first location in Menton in 2015. Now based in Nice, he continues serving traditional Maralpine dishes using local ingredients, maintaining a loyal customer base. He emphasizes his local roots, rejecting the idea of becoming a national franchise since, despite popularity, staffing shortages limit his ability to expand or meet high demand. Ballestra plans to focus on his signature barbajuans and hopes to publish cookbooks on regional cuisine.

Road Changes during UNOC - During the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) happening from the 9th-13th of June in Nice, two traffic lanes on the Promenade des Anglais will be reserved for official motorcades. Authorities advise avoiding the Prom’ area if possible due to expected disruptions. Additional impacts include public transport detours and a gala dinner at the Negresco Hotel on Sunday.

BUSINESS
The BBC has found that TikTok Shop sellers are selling food without listing required allergen information, which is illegal in the UK. Some products falsely claimed ingredients and allergens were "not applicable" or vaguely labelled items like milk and wheat as just "spices." TikTok deleted some listings after being alerted but the sellers remained active with other products still lacking proper labels. Allergy advocates and families have criticized TikTok for failing to enforce safety standards, warning it puts lives at risk. UK food safety laws, including Natasha’s Law, require full allergen labelling, but TikTok’s enforcement appears insufficient.

Tesla is not planning to manufacture cars in India, despite past discussions and government incentives. India's minister confirmed Tesla will open two showrooms but won’t invest in local production. Tesla had earlier wanted to export to India first, but talks stalled over local production demands. Analysts say high prices, low EV adoption, and poor infrastructure make India a tough market for Tesla. Other global carmakers like Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz have shown interest in Indian EV manufacturing.

And - The Hôtel de Paris wine cellars in Monaco, the world’s largest private wine cellar with over 350,000 bottles, will reopen on the 11th of June after major renovations, attended by Prince Albert II. Originally built in 1874, the historic cellars have been modernized by the Moinard Bétaille agency. In July, star pastry chef Cédric Grolet will open a new all-day tearoom in the hotel’s patio. He also becomes executive pastry chef, upgrading dessert offerings across the hotel (except at Louis XV). The hotel expects his presence to attract visitors from across the Côte d’Azur.

Football - Chelsea have opted not to sign winger Jadon Sancho on a permanent basis and will instead pay a £5m penalty to send the player back to Manchester United. The England forward moved to Stamford Bridge on loan last summer after his relationship with former United manager Erik ten Hag broke down. United, who signed Sancho for £73m from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, are happy for the 25-year-old to leave.

Rugby Union - Connacht have appointed former England boss Stuart Lancaster as their new head coach on a two-year deal. Lancaster, who has been out of work since leaving Racing 92 earlier this year, will replace Pete Wilkins, who stepped down after Connacht's Challenge Cup exit in April.
