Evening Update Tuesday 31 January 2023

Demonstrations have been held across France in protest at proposed pension reforms. According to unions, about 25,000 demonstrators were present in Nice, a number that the police put at 7,000. 40,000 people marched in Marseille according to police, a number disputed by the unions which put the number at about 200,000. Train and bus services have been severely disrupted and no trams are running in Nice today. There have also been significant delays and cancellations at Nice Cote d'Azur airport.

Cases of Covid-19 in Monaco have continued to decline. In the week to last Sunday only 14 cases of Covid were detected in the Principality. The incidence rate was 36 per 100,000 people, down from 43 in the previous week. As of Sunday January 29, 7 people, including 4 residents, were hospitalized at the Princess Grace Hospital. No one was being treated in intensive care. As at Sunday evening, 5 people were being followed by the Home Monitoring Centre.

A man has died after an accident on the A8 motorway this afternoon. The motorcyclist was in collision with a car near junction 44 at Antibes on the carriageway in the direction of Italy.

Inflation in France increased by 6.0% in January according to initial data from government statistics office INSEE. It's up slightly from 5.9% the previous month. The rise is due to an acceleration in food and energy prices. Over one month, consumer prices increased by 0.4% in January, after falling by 0.1% in December.

French Health minister Francois Braun has assured chronically ill people who don't have a doctor that they will be contacted by health authorities before June. About 600,000 people in France who don't have an attending physician have long term health issues. The minister said that it is unacceptable that such people don't have regular monitoring of their health.

Two people have reportedly been taken into custody in connection with the disappearance of a teenager in the Gard department last week. Army personnel and helicopters have been used in the search for Sihem who hasn't been seen since leaving her grandmother's house in the town of La Grande-Combe last Wednesday. Her family have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

 

BUSINESS

Supermarket operator Tesco has acquired the brand and intellectual property of UK stationery chain Paperchase, shortly after it fell into administration. Tesco has not acquired the chain's 106 shops in the UK and Ireland, leaving the future of 820 staff in doubt.

GDP increased by 0.1% in the euro area in the last quarter of 2022 compared with the previous quarter, according to an initial estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. It's down from growth of 0.3% in the previous quarter.

 

SPORT

Football... Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo is being loaned to Bayern Munich. He joins until the end of the season with the option to join permanently in the summer for a fee of 70 million euros.

Rugby Union... Leigh Halfpenny is set to make his first start for Wales for 19 months in Saturday's Six Nations game against Ireland. He's been out with a serious knee injury. Ken Owens captains Wales for the first time in the match.
