Evening Update Tuesday 30th September 2025

NEWS
Scam on Tiktok and Instagram - A growing scam on TikTok and Instagram lures people with promises of easy money, tricking them into acting as “money mules” and leaving victims with massive debts. Consumer groups warn banks often refuse reimbursement, urging the public to avoid sharing personal details and to report suspicious activity immediately.

2nd of October strikes - Around 10% of primary school teachers are expected to strike on Thursday, less than in September, but unions say anger remains strong. The action is part of a nationwide protest to pressure the government on education funding, tax justice, and social fairness.

Road collpases in Nice - Repeated road collapses have sparked fears of a major accident, with an opposition councillor demanding urgent geotechnical studies in Nice’s Cimiez district. City officials dismiss the claims, blaming natural soil issues and a private sewer leak rather than large urban projects.

Residents want speed bumps - Residents of Gilette near Nice have launched a petition demanding speed bumps on a road where cars often ignore the 30 km/h limit. They warn of repeated accidents and speeding vehicles, saying action is needed before a serious tragedy occurs.

Combatting senior isolation - In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 30,000 seniors over 60 live in extreme isolation, described as “social death,” according to a 2025 report by Les Petits Frères des Pauvres. The study highlights weakened family, friend, and neighbour ties, raising urgent concerns about combating elderly loneliness in the region. Every 1st October, the association Les Petits Frères des Pauvres gathers as part of the United Nations International Day of Older People, inviting anyone to join them to discuss such issues in Nice, Antibes, Cannes, the Var and other cities of the PACA region.

Breast cancer cases on the rise - Breast cancer cases are rising in the Alpes-Maritimes, yet only 35% of women have undergone screening in 2024, far below the 70% national target. Health authorities are ramping up awareness campaigns during “Octobre Rose” to boost participation, as early detection remains crucial.

Pesticides in the region's vineyards air - A study in the PACA region vineyards have found spikes of pesticides in the air, sometimes above the national average, even in organic areas, especially after heavy rains or spring treatments. Experts warn there are still no regulations on acceptable pesticide levels in the air, raising concerns about residents’ exposure.

NEWS UPDATE
Red Cross - The French Red Cross has revamped its charity shop with a more modern, uniform layout to better showcase donated goods in Hyères, Var. It also plans to launch a first-aid training course for citizens later this year.

Pink Octobre beer - Local brewery La Bière de la Rade is turning its signature beer “La Girelle” pink for October and donating 50 cents per bottle sold in Toulon, Var. The campaign supports Pink Octobre, raising awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.

Sales for SNCF train tickets - SNCF train tickets for the Christmas and New Year holiday period (from the 14th of December to the 7th of January) will go on sale tomorrow. Tickets are flexible, with TGV Inoui and Intercités refundable up to 7 days before departure, and OUIGO modifiable for a fee.

BUSINESS
US President Donald Trump has threatened a 100% tariff on all films made outside the US, claiming foreign production is “stealing” from Hollywood and hurting California’s industry. Critics warn the move could drive up costs, damage jobs in both the US and Canada, and prove difficult to enforce given today’s globalized film production.

And - The US faces a likely government shutdown as Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked over spending and healthcare subsidies, with neither side showing willingness to compromise. Both parties blame each other, and the standoff risks major political fallout similar to the record 35-day shutdown under US President Trump’s first term.

SPORTS
Football - Arsenal centre-back William Saliba says he has signed a new five-year contract at the club because boss Mikel Arteta and his staff can help him "become the best" defender in the world.
Meanwhile, Wales have recalled captain Aaron Ramsey for October's World Cup qualifier against Belgium and friendly with England.

Cricket - Rehan Ahmed, Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker have been named in an England Lions squad that will shadow the senior side on the tour of Australia.

Basketball - During the EuroLeague, AS Monaco’s Roca team will face Lithuania’s Zalgiris Kaunas at home tomorrow at 7:30pm in the Salle Gaston Medecin.
