Evening Update Tuesday 14 March 2023

An eighth day of protests against the French government's pension reforms is taking place tomorrow. A march is expected to leave from the Jardins Albert 1er in Nice at 10am tomorrow. Further demonstrations are planned across our region, including in Draguignan, Brignoles, Toulon and Marseille. Tomorrow's day of protest was chosen by unions to coincide with a meeting of the CMP Commission in the French parliament. The meeting of seven deputies and seven senators will attempt to find agreement on the pension proposals. Train services will be disrupted from early this evening. The SNCF have said that nationally 2 out of 5 local TER trains are expected to operate, 3 out of 5 TGV and Ouigo trains and 1 out of 3 inter-city. Those figures are similar to the disruption experienced on 13 and 14 March. More information is available at local stations, on the SNCF Assistant App and on sncf.com Flights are also expected to be disrupted from Nice Cote d'Azur airport. In Paris, the CGT union said that refuse collectors have renewed their strike until 20 March.

Protesting union members have cut power to the administrative services at the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture today. The surrounding neighbourhood was also affected by the cuts. Yesterday, union members cut power supplies to Cannes Mandelieu airport which resulted in some flights being diverted to Nice for a short period.

The MIPIM real estate gathering in Cannes was opened by local and national elected officials this morning, amongst them Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Cannes David Lisnard and Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Bechu. The event is taking place at the Palais des Festivals until this Friday. Christian Estrosi announced that the first edition of the Nice Climate Summit will take place on the 28th and 29th of September this year.
