Evening Update Monday 27 October 2025

Traffic is returning to normal on the A8 motorway near Antibes after a major vehicle fire earlier today. The carriageway in the direction of Italy was completely closed to traffic after a truck carrying tyres caught fire at 11.00 this morning. One lane was re-opened to traffic around lunchtime.

The Ministry of Transport has said that a hundred TGV trains on the line between the Cote d’Azur and Paris will be affected by cancellations and delays today. The disruption to services began early this morning after what the government referred to as “sabotage” to signalling equipment in the area between Lyon and Avignon. The SNCF have said that a return to normal is being planned for tomorrow morning.

The trial is beginning in Paris today of ten people who are accused of cyberbullying Brigitte Macron, the wife of the President. Amongst other alleged offences, they are accused of spreading the false rumour that Brigitte Macron is a transgender woman. The trial is expected to last two days.

Associations which represent victims of the 2016 Nice terror attack have proposed naming a square in Nice in their honour. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi has recently said that the square in front of the police station should be named after former French President Nicolas Sarkosy, who began a jail term last week, but the associations are campaigning for it named “July 14, 2016”, which was the date of the attack.

A fire in undergrowth near Castellar in the Alpes-Maritimes which broke out over the weekend has been extinguished. Firefighters will still be monitoring the area over the coming days to ensure that the blaze doesn’t resume.
