Evening Update Monday 26 August

Two motorcyclists are recovering in the Pasteur Hospital in Nice after falling 10 metres into a ravine. Their motorcycle left the D21 on a bend in the road between Peille and L'Escarène and fell into the ravine early yesterday evening. Mountain pompiers and a Dragon 06 helicopter assisted in the rescue. The couple were conscious when rescuers arrived and it’s thought that the dense vegetation in the area broke their fall.

Two swimmers have been rescued from drowning in separate incidents in the Alpes Maritimes. A woman in her eighties was taken to La Fontonne hospital in Antibes after being rescued yesterday evening at Saint-Laurent-du-Var. A 70 year old woman from the UK was taken to hospital after apparently suffering a heart attack in the sea off Cannes this morning. Meanwhile, in the Var, authorities rescued a woman and her daughter who had fallen from the coastal path at La Seyne-sur-Mer this morning. Reports say they suffered slight injuries.

The trial of a man accused of assaulting a caregiver at the Pasteur 2 Hospital in Nice has been adjourned until September the 11th. He is accused of assaulting the nurse on the night of the 5th of August while receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency department. Staff have been staging demonstrations over the last few weeks, to draw attention to what they say is the need for extra security for staff.

The office of the mayor of Grasse, Jerome Viaud, was vandalised over the weekend.  Several shots appear to have been fired at the window and glass front door of the premises. In a statement, the mayor denounced what he called “this unacceptable act of  rare violence”. An investigation is underway.

A fire in undergrowth in Nice was quickly brought under control yesterday afternoon. Local residents raised the alert around lunchtime and water bombing helicopters were used to extinguish the blaze in Falicon. Reports say an area of about 500 to 1,000 square metres was consumed by the fire.

Police are searching for an individual in Marseille in connection with the vandalisation of about 120 cars.  The vehicles, which were in a parking garage in the 5th arrondissement, were apparently all vandalised within the space of a few days.

A man has been arrested in the Puy-de-Dôme department in central France, accused of making threats against the police. Authorities found the names and home addresses of a large number of police officers when they searched the suspect’s home, along with Nazi literature. The 46 year old had apparently told an acquaintance that he hated the police and wanted to kill them, which the acquaintance then reported to the authorities.
