NEWS
Thierry Ardisson has died - French TV host and producer Thierry Ardisson has died in Paris at the age of 76 from liver cancer, his family announced. Known as "the man in black," he created cult shows like Tout le monde en parle and Salut les Terriens !, shaping French late-night television with his bold, provocative style. He began his career in advertising and nightlife before becoming a TV staple from the 1980s onward. His wife, journalist Audrey Crespo-Mara, said he died surrounded by family. With strong ties to the Côte d’Azur, he leaves behind a rich legacy in French media and pop culture.

Nice commemorates the 2016 Bastille Day attack - Nice commemorates the 2016 Bastille Day attack that killed 86 people and injured hundreds when a truck drove into crowds on the Promenade des Anglais. This 14th of July 2025, civil tributes are being held, including the reading of victims' names and lighting of 86 candles. Survivors and families gather for remembrance, though for many, returning remains painful. A concert by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and a symbolic light tribute at 10:34pm will mark the end of the day's ceremonies. The city reaffirmed its commitment to never forget the victims.

Weather of the week - The weather in the Alpes-Maritimes department this mid-July week will be mostly sunny, with temperatures rising inland and staying around 30°C on the coast. Monday to Thursday will see clear skies with some wind gusts, especially in mountain areas. Inland highs may reach 36°C, while coastal cities like Nice and Antibes will stay between 27–32°C. Friday will bring more clouds and slightly cooler temperatures as thunderstorms and rain are expected inland over the weekend, while the coast should remain sunny.

Car accident in Antibes - A car has overturned after a collision between two vehicles around 11am this morning in Antibes' Croix-Rouge area. A 70-year-old woman managed to get out of the car on her own before emergency services arrived. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Antibes Juan-les-Pins Hospital.

Missing hiker - A 69-year-old hiker, André Chanteloup, has been missing since the 10th of July in the Montgenèvre–Névache area of the French Alps. Despite extensive search efforts involving mountain rescue teams and a tracking dog, no trace has been found. An investigation has been opened for a worrying disappearance, and a witness appeal remains active. Authorities are now also analysing phone data to help guide the search.

Hospitalisation à Domicile - Around 50 patients now receive hospital care at home through a service called Hospitalisation à Domicile (HAD) in Cannes. This allows treatments like chemotherapy to be done comfortably at home, avoiding hospital visits and improving quality of life. Patients report better morale and stronger relationships with home nurses. The service is growing in France, with 168,000 people currently using it. It offers high-quality care at lower cost compared to traditional hospital stays.

NEWS UPDATE
Bastille Day arrests - During the night of the 13th-14th of July, nearly 400 people have been arrested across France during Bastille Day celebrations, including 176 in the Paris area. Authorities have reported 313 police custodies, 28 injured security personnel, and 651 incidents involving illegal use of fireworks. Around 53,000 police and emergency forces have been deployed, with 65,000 on duty for the 14th of July itself. One major incident involved a gymnasium fire in Seine-Saint-Denis, caused by a car fire spreading to the building.

Car accident involving a 3-year-old - A serious accident has occurred on Saturday the 12th of July when a 3-year-old girl was hit by a car while crossing the road, hidden behind a parked vehicle in Nice. The car was moving slowly (under 30 km/h), and the driver tested negative in routine checks. The girl has been placed in an artificial coma at Lenval Hospital, with her condition stabilising by Sunday. An investigation for involuntary injury has been opened.

BUSINESS
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated that Boeing’s fuel control switches are safe, despite their reported role in the June crash of Air India Flight 171, which killed 260 people. A preliminary report found the fuel switches had moved to "cut-off" just after take-off, cutting engine power. A 2018 FAA advisory had urged checks on these switches, but Air India had not implemented them. The FAA maintains the issue doesn't pose a general safety risk. A full investigation report is expected within a year.

And - The Bank of England may make larger interest rate cuts if the job market weakens, Governor Andrew Bailey said. He believes the direction for rates is “downward” but insists changes will be “gradual and careful.” Signs of slowing employment, smaller pay rises, and rising job availability suggest the economy has slack, helping to ease inflation. The UK job market is showing strain following an increase in employer national insurance contributions. With recent economic contractions, experts expect a rate cut as early as the Bank’s August meeting.

SPORTS
Football - Valencia centre-back Cristhian Mosquera has agreed personal terms with Arsenal, with a move to the Premier League club getting closer. BBC Sport previously reported that Arsenal were in talks to sign the 21-year-old but now another element to the deal has been completed.

Tennis - Carlos Alcaraz watched with a smile on his face as newly crowned Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner ascended the famous Centre Court steps to embrace his friends and family. The two-time champion lost 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 to Sinner in an enthralling final - a rematch of the epic French Open showdown in which Alcaraz bounced back from two sets down and inflicted a brutal defeat on Sinner just five weeks ago.

Golf - Italy's Francesco Molinari has been named as Europe's fourth vice-captain for September's Ryder Cup in New York. The 42-year-old fulfilled the same role at the 2023 event in Rome, which was won by Europe.
