Evening Update Friday 1 September 2023

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in a village in the Savoie department yesterday morning. The man in his sixties has been held in police custody. According to reports in French media, he is the ex-husband of the victim. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin expressed his thanks to the police who he said carried out the arrest "by mobilizing very significant resources".

President Macron is visiting a vocational high school in Orange in the Vaucluse department today. It's his first visit to the town as President. He is being accompanied by recently appointed Education Minister Gabrial Attal and the Minister for Vocational Education Carole Grandjean. The president said that the situation of vocational high schools is "unacceptable" and has said on previous occasions that improvements need to be made. He has been addressing heads of schools by web meeting during this afternoon.

A section of the A8 motorway in the Alpes-Maritimes was closed for a time this afternoon because of an accident. Motorway operator VINCI Autoroutes said that an incident involving a heavy goods vehicle occurred this afternoon around 3:30 p.m. between the Menton and Roquebrune Cap Martin interchanges on the carriageway towards Aix-en -Provence. It led to the closure of the A8 motorway towards Aix-en-Provence. The immobilized heavy goods vehicle was evacuated. The road has now been reopened and traffic has been restored to two lanes.

A 21 month old child has survived after falling from the seventh floor of a building. Firefighters were able to perform resuscitation when they arrived at the scene in the town of Pessac near Bordeaux yesterday evening. Police said that the fall was accidental and an inquiry has been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has visited the CHU hospital in Nice. He expressed his thanks to the emergency teams and the staff who faced record attendance during the summer period with what he said was "great courage and professionalism." He said that there were up to 361 admissions on July 24.

A new TV channel is starting today. TVMonaco will feature news, sports and Monegasque culture as well as environmental news and features. HSH Prince Albert II will officially launch the channel at 7.15 this evening.

 

BUSINESS

UK defence company BAE Systems has set up a business in Ukraine and signed contracts regarding the supply of weapons and equipment to the country. It said that the steps will allow it to work directly with Ukraine to explore potential partners and ultimately produce light artillery there.

The Office for National Statistics has revised UK economic growth figures for 2021. The ONS revised growth upwards by 0.9% meaning that GDP grew by 8.5%. The new figures mean that the UK economy returned to its pre-pandemic level earlier than previously thought, in the fourth quarter of 2021.

UK train passengers are facing disruption once again today as rail workers take part in their latest strike. Members of train drivers' union Aslef have walked out and will refuse to work overtime tomorrow. RMT union members at 14 train operators will also strike tomorrow as part of a long-running dispute.

Motorsports.. Max Verstappen was fastest in first practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Carlos Sainz was second, followed by Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc.

Football... Manchester City have completed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Wolves for £53m on a five year contract. Meanwhile, Chelsea have signed England Under-21 forward Cole Palmer from Manchester City. He’s signed a seven-year contract with the option of a further year. Nottingham Forest have signed Portuguese player Nuno Tavares from Arsenal on a season-long loan with options.
