The French Ministry of National Education has said that 674 Ukrainian pupils are now enrolled in educational establishments in Nice, which is the second highest number in France. 589 pupils are being educated in the Versailles area of ​​Paris. The ministry said that nationally, as at yesterday, 6,873 Ukrainians were enrolled in schools, colleges and high schools.

Almost twenty French departments are on Meteo France Orange level alerts for snow and icy conditions. Meteo France said that it is a notable snow episode for this time of year covering the Massif Central and extending to the Pyrenees and part of the Alps and Corsica. Locally, Meteo France have a yellow warning for snow and icy conditions in the Alpes-Maritimes until at least 4pm on Saturday.

 

A teenager has died on the Marseille metro system. Reports say that the body of the 16 year old was found yesterday near to the Blancarde station.

The Ministry of National Education has said that almost 2,900 school classes have been closed this week because of Covid-19. However, the figure represents only about 0.55% of all classes. There were just over 88,000 known cases of pupils having Covid-19 and about 11,600 educational staff.

The Prom Classic is taking place in Nice this Sunday. Many roads in the center of Nice as well as parts of the Promenade des Anglais will be closed or subject to traffic restrictions. Various public car parks will also be inaccessible. Full details are available on www.nice.fr

The French air force is patrolling the skies above several Baltic countries from today. As part of NATO surveillance, French planes are patrolling the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. They are taking over the duties from the Belgian air force. Four French airforce Mirage 2000 jets arrived at an airbase in Estonia about two weeks ago and will remain on station until the beginning of August.

The Australian government may pay up to 3.7 billion euros in respect of the cancellation of a submarine contract. The cancellation of the order caused a diplomatic rift between the French and Australian governments. An Australian senator asked Tony Dalton, the Assistant Secretary in the Australian department of defense if Australia would have to pay 5.5 billion Australian dollars to which he replied that it would be "within that price", adding that the exact amount was not yet known.


BUSINESS

The unemployment rate in the United States fell to 3.6% in March. The US economy added 431,000 jobs which was less than the three quarters of a million added in February.

Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 7.5% in March 2022, up from 5.9% in February according to an initial estimate from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. It's the highest level since the creation of the Euro. Energy is expected to have the highest annual rate in March at 44.7% followed by food, alcohol and tobacco at 5.0%.

UK National Lottery operator Camelot has launched a legal challenge over the loss of its licence. The proceedings are against the Gambling Commission and come after Allwyn was selected as the preferred applicant for the lottery's next license beginning in 2024. The head of Camelot said he believed the regulator had "got this decision badly wrong" but the Gambling Commission said it had run a "fair and robust" competition.

 

SPORT

Football... Bruno Fernandes has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United. He's now under contract with the club until 2026 and the new deal includes an option for a further one-year extension.

Harry Kane has been named Premier League player of the month for a seventh time. He now equals the record player of the month awards achieved by Sergio Aguero.
