One man dead after building collapses - A three storey apartment building has collapsed in Sanary sur mer in the Var, following an explosion at 3.50 this morning. The origin of the explosion is still remains to be determined at this stage. Latest reports say that a 30 year old man has been found dead in the rubble. Firefighters managed to extract a woman and her baby who were taken to hospital as they continue their search for at least two other people still reported missing. Nine people were evacuated from nearby buildings and the prefecture has announced the opening of a medical-psychological emergency cell activated this afternoon at 2pm. Missing person -Police have launched a missing person's appeal following the worrying disappearance of René Sauneuf in Bormes les Mimosas in the Var. 78-year-old René has not been seen since October 15th when he left his home at around 4 p.m., on foot. René is bald and at the time was wearing a grey coat and glasses. Anyone with any information is invited to contact the police in Bormes on 04.94.71.11.92.

Protests by hospital staff in Nice today - Hospital staff have announced strike action today in Nice with a gathering organised at 2pm this afternoon at Place Masséna. The protest comes in a demand for better working conditions.

Yannick Bestaven elected sailor of the year - The French skipper Yannick Bestaven has been elected sailor of the year and was decorated with the Legion of Honour on Monday, December 6th during a ceremony in Paris. The skipper receives for the first time this distinction, created 20 years ago it has rewarded great names in sailing such as Michel Desjoyeaux, double winner of the Vendée Globe and Franck Cammas. Bestaven won the Vendée Globe 2020/2021 after 80 days of a solo and non-stop race around the world which was notably marked by the sinking of Kevin Escoffier and his epic rescue by Jean Le Cam.
