Average of covid patients in hospital drops dramatically - In the most recent update from Public Health France the average age of patients being hospitalised with covid, to intensive care units is 59, and 85% of patients hospitalised are not vaccinated. Outside of critical care units the average age is 57, last November it was 72.

Hospital admission increase in the Var region - Meanwhile in the Var hospital admissions continue to increase. On Monday August 9th, more than 50 "Covid patients" were admitted to hospitals in the department. A record for more than four months. This daily total is the highest since April 7th when France was experiencing the 3rd wave and at the start of the 3rd national lockdown.

Monaco declares six new cases of covid on Monday - In Monaco on Monday 9th August six new cases of covid were declared bringing the total number of residents affected in the Principality since the beginning of the health crisis to 2,992. Thirty people are currently in hospital and 83 are being followed by the Home Monitoring Centre.

Rwandan man arrested on suspicion of killing a Roman Catholic priest - A Rwandan man has been arrested in western France on suspicion of killing a Roman Catholic priest. The body of Olivier Maire was found in the village of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre in the Vendée area on Monday morning. The unnamed suspect, a failed asylum seeker housed by the priest, turned himself in and confessed. The 40-year-old man is also suspected of starting a fire that seriously damaged the cathedral in nearby Nantes in July last year.

French President Emmanuel Macron praised the "generosity" of the Roman Catholic priest and said his thoughts were with all Catholics in France. The killing has sparked political debate about why the suspect was still in France.

Air quality in the Port of Toulon - The AtmoSud association has recently published the results of its 2020 campaign in which the pollution linked to maritime traffic in the port of Toulon was analyzed. The report was approved by the Ministry of the Environment last year and the analysis is part of an unprecedented large-scale campaign.

Saint Tropez experiencing a busy summer despite pandemic - Despite the pandemic and the absence of non-EU customers, Saint Tropez is experiencing one of its busiest tourist seasons with the mayor Sylvie Siri declaring “we have never seen so many people in July”.

The return of foreigners for the 2021 season is delighting businesses in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, even if they fear that the expansion of the health pass will shatter good momentum. Similar to 2020, French tourists make up the majority of holidaymakers currently in the Gulf.
