New Cases of Dengue - Three new cases of locally transmitted dengue have been detected in Vallauris in the Alpes-Maritimes. The regional health agency (ARS) has initiated mosquito control measures to prevent further spread. This follows a nationwide increase in dengue cases, with 2023-2024 seeing record numbers in France and globally.

Fraud - A report has revealed a fraud of 7.4 million euros at the Family Allowance Fund in Toulon, in the Var. Last year, 115,124 beneficiaries of the Family Allowance Fund or (CAF) were checked, which is 1 out of 2 beneficiaries. Of those checked 943 cases of fraud were revealed representing an amount of 7.4 million euros.

Local train timetables - The timetables for the local TER train network are to be modified on all lines this Thursday September 26th. The SNCF has announced an exceptional "test day" which will involve the modification of the timetables in view to increase the train traffic between Nice and Ventimiglia from December 15th, with a train running every 15 minutes. Flooding in Cannes, Frustrated Mayor - The mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard, has expressed frustration over the lack of warning ahead of severe flooding which hit the city on Monday, criticizing "specialized" services for failing to anticipate the intense rainfall. A weather alert was issued an hour after the flooding began, despite the city already experiencing torrential rain. While no injuries were reported, Lisnard urged the prefect to investigate and improve future forecasting. The municipality managed the event with quick action, closing low-lying areas and activating pumps, while schools and nurseries remained safely open. Around 80mm of rain fell, leading to a 15km traffic jam on the A8 motorway.

Smoking ban - Some restaurant and café owners in Marseille have said that the news of a recommendation from European Commission to ban smoking in outdoor spaces such as on bar and restaurant terraces would be an “unenforceable measure”. Barnard Marty president of the Union of Trades and Industries of the Hotel Industry for the Bouches du Rhone and restaurant manager says that the matter has not yet been discussed at a union level adding that those in the industry are fed up with these bans, bars and restaurants are places to live”.

Most beautiful village - Bormes-les-Mimosas is one of three new villages in France to be awarded the most beautiful village label. To obtain the title as one of the “most beautiful villages in France” experts look at the heritage, urban planning and environmental qualities. The population must also be less than or equal to 2,000 inhabitants and there must be at least two protected sites or monuments. The picturesque village situated between the hills and the Mediterranean in the Var was chosen, alongside Marcolès (Cantal) and Villeneuve (Aveyron) and joins six other villages in the Var which already carry the label including Bargème, Cotignac, Gassin, Le Castellet, Seillans and Tourtour. In the neighboring Alpes-Maritimes, there is no change this year for the four villages concerned: Coaraze, Gourdon, Sainte-Agnès and Saorge. 180 villages across France carry the label which is reviewed every six to nine years.

Auction - Finally, an antique diamond necklace worn at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation and possibly linked to a French scandal involving Marie Antoinette could fetch as much as £2m at auction. The necklace boasts 500 diamonds, featured on three ropes, and will go on a global tour beginning at Sotheby’s London auction house before jetting off to Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, Taipei and Dubai.

Business

The union representing thousands of striking Boeing workers has refused an offer which has been described as a "best and final" pay offer, proposing a 30% rise over four years. The new offer also included the reinstatement of a performance bonus and improved retirement benefits. More than 30,000 Boeing workers went on strike earlier this month after rejecting a 25% pay rise offer.

Due to security risks the US says that it is planning to ban certain hardware and software made in China and Russia from cars, trucks and buses. Officials said they were worried that the technology in question, used for autonomous driving and to connect cars to other networks, could allow enemies to "remotely manipulate cars on American roads". There is currently minimal use of Chinese or Russia-made software in American cars.

Rugby Union – France’s Antoine Dupont has once again been voted best player in the Top 14 and best French international. The scrumhalf was named best player in the French championship for the third time in four years on Monday. Winner of the championship and the European Cup with Toulouse and Olympic gold medallist with the French rugby 7s team, the scrumhalf was voted best player in the Top 14 and best Bleu of the season.

Tennis – Emma Raducanu has pulled out of this week's China Open in Beijing because of a foot injury. The 21-year-old Briton had to retire injured from her Korea Open quarter-final in Seoul on Saturday because of the issue. Raducanu's name appeared in the Beijing draw when it was released on Monday before she withdrew shortly afterwards.

Football – Rumour has is that Everton football club are interested in 54-year-old Gareth Southgate, as a potential candidate to replace his fellow Englishman Sean Dyche, as manager at Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Greater Manchester has confirmed that for the time being no public money will be spent on Manchester United's plans for revamping their Old Trafford home.
