11-year-old girl from British family shot dead - An 11-year-old girl from a British family has been shot dead in Brittany north-western France. The incident occurred on Saturday evening in the village of Saint-Herbot and was reportedly due to a dispute between neighbours which had been ongoing for several years over a plot of land. The family were at the time in their garden when the shots were fired, and it was girl’s eight-year-old sister who raised the alarm. The father is in a critical condition in hospital and the mother is also being cared for. The suspect, who has been reported to be a 71-year-old Dutch national, has been arrested along with his wife.

President of the Republican party urges for action against immigration in France - Eric Ciotti, president of the Les Républicains party has urged the French President Emmanuel Macron to organize a referendum to “control” immigration in France. Ciotti president of the party and MP for the Alpes Maritimes, has put pressure on the head of state in recent days following the knife attack in Annecy. Speaking to French media on Sunday Ciotti strongly urged the government “to act on migration” saying that “the situation is chaotic in France and needs to be dealt with urgently”.

EU agree radical reforms on migration and asylum laws - Meanwhile, the EU has agreed radical reforms of its migration and asylum laws including charges of €20,000 per head for member countries that refuse to host refugees. After almost 12 hours of intense negotiations in Luxembourg, and years of fighting, interior ministers struck a deal last week on what they described as a “historical” new approach to what one politician described as an often “toxic topic”.

People gather to honour those who risked lives in knife attack in Annecy - Hundreds of residents have gathered in Annecy to honour those who risked their lives during the attack.  As people laid flowers in the same park where Thursday’s attack took place, Annecy’s mayor, François Astorg, praised the “courage and professionalism” of those who had fought the attacker and described Sunday’s gathering as “a strong sign of unity and solidarity”. According to reports the lives of the four children, aged between 22 months and three years who had been stabbed in the attack, are no longer in danger. One of them, a three-year-old British girl who was on holiday in Annecy with her parents, is due to leave hospital in the next few days.

26-year-old woman dies from injuries after falling from a private yacht in the port of Nice - A 26-year-old South African woman has died from her injuries after falling from a private yacht moored in Port of Nice on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly after 10am. Several people were on board at the time. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances.

Knife attack - A young man has been arrested and placed in police custody for questioning in Fréjus, in the Var, in connection with a knife attack on his partner a few hours earlier in Nice. The victim a 27-year-old woman was found with serious stab wounds at an Air BnB on Rue de la Buffa on Saturday afternoon.

Motorist spends three days in a ditch before being rescued - A 70-year-old woman has been rescued after spending three days in a ravine after her car veered off the road and fell 50 metres. The incident occurred near the village of Castagniers. The victim who was discovered on Sunday afternoon at around 4pm was slightly injured and taken to hospital in Nice.

Grimaldi Historical Sites - His Serene Highness Prince Albert II Monaco is to visit Villeneuve-Loubet today Monday 12th June, at part of the celebrations of the “Grimaldi Historical Sites”. The link between Villeneuve-Loubet and the Principality of Monaco dates back to the Middle Ages, when the fortress of Villeneuve was under the control of the Grimaldis of Monaco for almost a century. The Prince will be welcomed by the mayor of Villeneuve-Loubet, Mr Lionnel Lucca and will be invited to unveil a plaque marking the network of historical sites of the Grimaldis of Monaco.

The visit today coincides with celebrations held this weekend on the rock in the Principality at part of the “4th Meeting of Grimaldi Historic Sites in Monaco”. The meeting invites each department to highlight its historic links with the Principality and give an introduction to its region and its cultural heritage. In his opening speech, the Prince paid tribute to Albert Croesi who had instigated these historic meetings and was the deputy Vice President of the Grimaldi Historical Sites Federation and who sadly died rather suddenly on June 2nd.

Beyonce performs despite delay due to bad weather - Despite a delay due to heavy rain in Marseille on Sunday evening Beyonce was finally able to perform at the Vélodrome stadium. Much to the delight of fans and despite the delay due to severe weather the singer took to the stage a little late declaring “Marseille, I love you” and thanking the fans for having put up with the bad weather and the wait.

Business

The Australian government has been urged to seize a once-in-a-generation opportunity to clamp down on gambling advertising, as anti-gambling advocates and public health experts await the outcome of a parliamentary inquiry that is expected to issue policy recommendations this week.

From today Monday 12th June the official simulator of the Info-retraite.fr website, which will allow those in France to know their retirement age and the amount of their pension will be in service after having been update following the pension reform.  While the site had approximately one million monthly connections last year, it has reached 4 million monthly connections following the movement in France against the reform.

According to reports Meta has shown staff plans for a text-based social network designed to compete with Twitter.  It could allow users to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta's image-sharing app. A Meta spokesperson has confirmed that the platform was in development.

From today Monday 12th June, in protest at how the site Reddit is being run thousands of Reddit communities will be inaccessibleAlmost 3,500 subreddits will be affected as a result. A subreddit is the name given to a forum within the Reddit platform - effectively a community of people who gather to discuss a particular interest. 

Sport

Tennis - Novak Djokovic showed his greatness winning a men's record 23rd Grand Slam title with victory over Norway's Casper Ruud in the French Open final at Roland Garros. The Serb moves into the outright lead of men's majors ahead of Rafael Nadal. He also becomes the first man to win all four majors at least three times.
Football - Manchester City were welcomed home by fans as they arrived back in the UK from Istanbul after winning the Champions League for the first time. They are only the second English men's side to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season after Manchester United in 1999.  Thousands more are expected to line the streets in Manchester city centre for a victory parade today.  The City squad will travel in an open-top bus through the city.

Cricket - Australia won the World Test Championship by ruthlessly dismantling India on the fifth day of the final at The Oval.

Motor Racing - Ferrari took a shock victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours 100th anniversary race, with a line-up including Britain's James Calado. The 33-year-old was part of a three-driver line-up who beat overwhelming favourites Toyota in a race that saw several car manufacturers return. It means, 58 years after their last victory, Ferrari have now taken their 10th top level Le Mans win in one of the most thrilling races for years.
