Evening Update Tuesday 19 September 2023

Four police officers have been injured in Aix-en-Provence after a refusal to comply with instructions. Reports say that the driver of a car attempted to drive at officers in the early hours of this morning who then opened fire on the car. The police officers suffered slight injuries but were taken to hospital. Two passengers in the car were arrested but the driver is still on the run.

The national anti-terrorist prosecutor has reportedly issued charges against the Tunisian man suspected of carrying out the attack at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Nice in 2020. Three people lost their lives in the attack. It's expected that the trial will be held next year.

A man in his fifties has drowned today in St Jean Cap Ferrat. The tragic incident is the second drowning on the Riviera in recent days. Yesterday a man in his thirties drowned in Nice.

Forest areas in the Var are still at risk of fire despite yesterday's rain. Five forest massifs are at a "severe" risk level with access not advised and four are at "moderate" risk today. An interactive map showing risk levels can be found on the Prefecture's website www.var.gouv.fr

An inquiry has been opened after twelve people inhaled insecticide at a hotel in the Val-de-Marne department near Paris. They have all been hospitalised, including a twelve year old child who is in a serious condition.

The French government has released 35 million euros to help municipalities to renovate ageing structures such as bridges. The allocation follows a survey of the condition of structures in France in the wake of the collapse of the bridge in Genoa in Italy in 2018.

19,000 employees will be working on the RATP public transport system in Paris during next year's Olympics according to Jean Castex. The former French Prime Minister is now CEO of the RATP system. Speaking to French media he said that 1.5 million extra travellers are expected on the system next August for the Olympics.

 

BUSINESS

EU statistics agency Eurostat has said that the annual inflation rate in the eurozone was 5.2% in August, down slightly from the 5.3% recorded in July. The highest contribution to the inflation rate came from services, followed by food, alcohol and tobacco. The rate in France was 5.7%.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has forecast that the global economy will grow by 2.7% next year. It said that the world's economy proved more resilient than expected in the first half of 2023, but "the growth outlook remains weak". Global growth in 2024 is projected to be lower than in 2023. The organization is predicting that the French economy will grow by only 1.2% in 2024.

 

SPORT

Rugby Union... Jonathan Danty will make his Rugby World Cup debut for France in their game against Namibia in the World Cup on Thursday. He had previously been kept out of the squad by a hamstring injury. Cyril Baille will make his first appearance in the World Cup squad after also recovering from injury. France have made twelve changes to the starting side against Uruguay.
