Evening Update Tuesday 13 June 2023

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has said that he wants to see the introduction of a French equivalent of the US "Green Card" for immigrants. Speaking on French television this morning, he also said that he wants the deadline for appealing against decisions to leave French territory to be reduced, saying that the length of the period allows people to "vanish into thin air".

A school in the centre of Nice was evacuated today because of a suspected gas leak. A security perimiter was established late this morning in rue Adolphe de Rothschild. Several hundred students were evacuated from L'ecole Rothchild and were taken to the parc Durandy and the Durandy tram stop where they received lunch provided by the town hall. The all-clear was given at about 4pm after firefighters had not found any leak and said that the strong odour was from another source.

Meteo France have a yellow warning for the Alpes-Maritimes for storms and for heavy rain and flooding until 10pm this evening. The same warnings are in force  for the Var until midnight tonight. Tomorrow, there are yellow warnings for storms in the Alpes-Maritimes from 10am to 9pm and in the Var from 10am to 10pm. Details of weather warnings are available on www.meteofrance.com

President Macron has announced that the production of certain pharmaceutical drugs will be relocated to France in order to reduce shortages. Speaking on a visit to a laboratory in the Ardeche department today, he said that the government aims to bring the production of fifty drugs to France in order to reduce reliance on imports.

The promoters of the Canua Island project have said that the floating platform will not be located off Mandelieu this summer. The controversial project would have involved a large floating restaurant, bar lounge and beach club being located off the town. The promoters said today that the project had been subject to what they called a "political vendetta". Several elected officials had voiced their opposition to the project, including the President of the PACA region Renaud Muselier.

Authorities are still trying to locate an 80 year old man who was involved in a shooting in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The octogenarian allegedly shot a woman near the village of Mimet to the north of Marseille yesterday. The woman was hospitalised but her life is not in danger.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation has fallen in the United States. In May the Consumer Prices Index fell to an annual rate of 4%, down from 4.9% in April. It's the lowest level since March 2021.

New figures released today have shown unexpected strength in the UK jobs market. The unemployment rate fell to 3.8% in the three months to April. The number is up on the quarter but unchanged on the year, and is below pre-pandemic rates.

The US Federal Trade Commission has asked a judge to block Microsoft from completing its $69bn purchase of video game company Activision Blizzard. The FTC said the deal could "substantially lessen competition" in the sector. A hearing will begin in August. The move comes after the UK blocked the deal over concerns it would harm competition, but the EU has approved the deal.

 

SPORT

Golf.... A US Senate sub-committee is investigating the planned merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. A Senate sub-committee has requested documents regarding the deal.

Rugby Union... Newcastle Falcons have signed Argentina international prop Eduardo Bello. The 27 year old joins from Saracens on a two-year deal.

Motorsports... An auction of  Formula 1 tophies has raised over a quarter of a million euros for disaster relief in Italy. The four podium trophies and Pirelli pole position award from the cancelled Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix were sold in the auction. Major flooding in the Italian region in May led organisers to call off the race at Imola. All the proceeds raised are being donated to the region's Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection to support affected communities.
