A farmer has been killed and her husband and teenage daughter have been seriously injured

Farmer killed - A farmer has been killed and her husband and teenage daughter have been seriously injured after a vehicle drove into a roadblock set up by agricultural unions in Ariège south western France. The three occupants of the car which mowed down the family at the roadblock have been arrested and placed in police custody. At this stage of the investigation, it is not known if the car had deliberately driven into the demonstrators' barrier or whether another reason was at the origin of the incident. Farmer's unions called on their protesters to be cautious at roadblocks.

For several days in France, farmers have been expressing their discontent, but it is not just in France, farmers from all over Europe; from the Netherlands to Romania, via Germany and France, all are in turmoil over the price of fuel, Ukrainian competition and European constraints. French agriculture workers are unhappy about heavy burdens of regulation and environmental standards which they say make it impossible to make a profit.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, the Departmental Federation of Farmers' Unions (FDSEA) is planning a movement at the end of the week. The day, time and location will be communicated this Wednesday at the latest. Meanwhile, a go-slow protest has been announced for this Thursday morning in the Var with the intention of gathering in front of the prefecture in Toulon.
