Number of fatal accidents on French motorways on the rise - The number of fatal accidents on French motorways last year increased by 43%, killing 188 people. Most of the victims were under 35, heavily intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics, according to industry data released on Wednesday. In 2022, there were 188 people killed, compared to 131 in 2021.

In addition to alcohol consumption, the report underlines that accidents involving pedestrians (people getting out of a damaged or broken down vehicle and being mowed down) have doubled. Excessive speed remains a constant factor (around 18%), while drowsiness and fatigue have regressed (15.6% in 2022 compared to 19.3% in 2021). Looking at screens while driving is on the rise. In 2022, it caused 28 fatal accidents (15 in 2021).
