Mayor of Nice calls for “solidarity - The mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi has called for “solidarity” as the Alpes-Maritimes region welcomes Ukrainian refugees. 40% of those who arrive in France pass through La Turbie paytoll. While some continue on their way to Spain or Portugal, many report spontaneously to the Administrative Center in Nice, to regularize their situation.

French Interior Minister - France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has said “France is prepared to consider some form of autonomy for Corsica”. The minister’s comments came ahead of his two-day visit to the island which comes following the violent protests after an attack on a jailed separatist leader. Darmanin told local media that the French government is determined to engage in an "unprecedented discussion on institutional matters", adding that he was "prepared to go as far as autonomy". However, he said that no discussions could be held if violence on the island continues. Dozens of people, including police officers, have been injured in two weeks of sometimes violent protests.

Scientific Council warns that 5th wave is not completely over – In other news, France’s Scientific Council has warned that the 5th wave of covid is not completely over. In their assessment published on Tuesday experts warn of an epidemic rebound in France in the coming weeks. The council predicts that the number of daily cases could exceed 100,000 as early as March.

Men questioned after breaking in - Three men have been questioned by French police after breaking into a villa owned by the former son-in-law of Russian President Vladimir Putin in protest at the invasion of Ukraine. One of the men who broke into the luxury seaside residence in the southwestern resort of Biarritz is a French activist called Pierre Haffner. Another described himself as an opponent of the Putin government. The three men, who were questioned in an investigation into a "home invasion", were handed a police warning and released in the evening.
