Fatal accident on the A8 motorway - An 87-year-old man has died in a road accident on the A8 motorway. The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon shortly before 4pm between Antibes and Cannes at the Piccolaret motorway service area, in Mougins, westbound.  For a reason yet to be determined, a car got stuck under a lorry. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency services, they were unfortunately unable to do anything for the passenger in the car, an 87-year-old man, declared dead at the scene. The other two occupants of the car, a 57-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital in Antibes. Two hours after the accident, traffic conditions were still very difficult on the A8 with the closure of two lanes to allow emergency services to intervene safely despite the bad weather.

Flights cancelled due to bad weather - Meanwhile many flights were delayed or cancelled at Nice International Airport due to the bad weather which hit the region on Tuesday afternoon.

Interventions at sea - There were also several sea rescue interventions due to bad weather on the Côte d'Azur. Off the coast of Cannes, a barge carrying divers was immobilized while the dive was in the water. With the vessel’s anchor stuck, the eleven divers had to swim to the island of Sainte-Marguerite. On the Lérins island, an inflatable boat ran aground without any injuries deplored and at Port Gallice, in Antibes, a sailboat was in turn docked after its mooring broke. Luckily no one was on board. In the Var a family, including a baby, were saved by the SNSM in the Golfe de Saint-Tropez. The SNSM carried out five interventions on Tuesday afternoon.

Roads - On the roads a tree which fell onto the RDN7 between Fréjus and Puget heavily disrupted traffic.

Beaches - Access to the beaches in Fréjus was closed until Wednesday due to bad weather.

Kiss FM Live - And the “Kiss FM Live” scheduled for Tuesday evening in Golfe-Juan also had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. 7,000 people were expected to attend the event at the Théâtre de la mer in Golfe-Juan, as “Kiss FM Live” was to make its comeback after three years of absence due to the pandemic.

60,000 daily positive covid cases - In France, on average more than 60,000 daily positive cases of Covid are detected according to recent figures, which confirm a resumption of the epidemic. In the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region, all the indicators are once again up very sharply, with the exception of critical care admissions. The regional incidence rate has reached 713 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a jump of 74%. And among the departments most affected is the Alpes-Maritimes followed by the Bouches-du-Rhône with respective incidence rates of 812 and 749, i.e. above the average in the PACA region.

Campaign for AIDS testing - Meanwhile with testing for AIDS down, France has launched a national campaign in laboratories which means that from today people can carry out screening without a prescription. Called "in the lab without ordo" the campaign was launched nationally after being experimented with in Paris and the Alpes Maritimes. Each year, 5.8 million AID tests are performed in France.

In thirteen years’ time only electric vehicles will be authorized for sale. On Tuesday the 27 Member States of the European Union approved the Commission's project to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars in Europe to zero from 2035. The proposal, announced by the EU executive in July 2021, will mean the end of sales of petrol and diesel vehicles in the EU from 2035. The measure contributes to achieving the continent's climate objectives, in particular carbon neutrality by 2050.

The postal service in France has announced a “digital stamp” from next year. La Poste said Tuesday that it plans to market the digital stamp in the form of a code which can be copied onto the envelope. The technique is already used in Switzerland.

Holiday makers are no longer allowed to rent Airbnb listings for parties. Violators face account suspension and a permanent ban from the platform. After having suspended the holidays in the summer of 2020, Airbnb announced on Tuesday the permanent ban in all properties listed on its platform. Airbnb had started to toughen the tone at the end of 2019 by banning parties organized via social networks as well as unauthorized parties likely to disturb the neighbourhood. Holiday makers who seek to violate the rules face penalties, ranging from account suspension to permanent ban from the platform. 6,600 people were suspended for this reason in 2021.

US pharmacy giant Walgreens has dropped plans to sell Boots, saying buyers were unable to raise enough funds due to instability in financial markets. Walgreens said it had various offers for the pharmacy business after it put Boots up for sale in January. But none of the offers adequately reflected the high potential value of the UK pharmacy chain, it said. The Walgreens Boots Alliance said it would now keep Boots and the No7 beauty brand.

Sport

Tennis – American great and seven-time world champion Serena Williams' hopes of a victorious return to Wimbledon after a year out ended with a loss to Harmony Tan. 40-year-old Williams returned to the same Centre Court where she had limped out injured last year with a passionate display in a 7-5 1-6 7-6 (10-7) defeat.

Golf - The DP World Tour and PGA Tours have strengthened their alliance to try to fight off the threat posed by Saudi-funded LIV Golf, who stage their second tournament this week. The tournament begins on Thursday, the same day as the Irish Open. DP World Tour officials have yet to decide whether to escalate punishments, which included £100,000 fines and a ban from the Scottish Open and corresponding tournaments in America, for those rebels who played the opening event in London earlier this month.

Football - Monaco have confirmed the signing of Japan forward Takumi Minamino for £15.5m from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The Ligue 1 side were one of a number of clubs interested in the 27-year-old. Minamino scored 14 times in 55 outings for Liverpool and was their top scorer in domestic cup competitions last season.
