Germany and France call for a deal on migration - Germany and France have called for a Europe-wide deal on migration and asylum with the UK government. In a letter to the EU home affairs commissioner, the German interior minister, Nancy Faeser, and her former French counterpart, Gérald Darmanin, said Brexit had gravely affected “the coherence of migration policies”. Darmanin and Faeser urged the European Commission to “rapidly” present “a draft negotiating mandate” for talks with the UK on asylum and migration.

Noise pollution in Paris - Authorities in the Paris region have announced a plan to fight against noise pollution. The “plan anti-bruit” with a 100-million-euro envelope, aims to reduce noise pollution, caused mainly by traffic, between now and 2030. A recent survey has shown that for 3 million local inhabitants noise pollution due to public transport, road traffic. air and train travel have a negative impact on their daily lives. 

World leaders have hailed adoption of a pact at UN Summit of the Future - Heads of State and Governments have emphasized the need to rethink global governance and create a fairer, more inclusive multilateral system that will “benefit all countries” rather than “increase the power of a few”, as the Summit of the Future concluded its second and final day this week. Warning that inaction could lead the planet “to a dark future”, they stressed the need for Security Council reform, greater youth engagement in decision-making and bold actions to address the adverse impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the summit HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco said that the Pact for the Future establishes a bedrock for a more prosperous world and allows young people to flourish in an environment protected from security threats such as transnational crime. He added that "peace is our most valuable asset”, noting that without access to human rights, a world benefiting all people is impossible.

Near miss at Marseille airport, ongoing investigation - It’s been reported that there was a lucky escape following a close encounter between two aircrafts at Marseille airport. The incident occurred on September 11th at around 8.30pm, when an Algerian airliner passenger flight was coming into land on the same runway and at the same time, as a Spanish cargo run aeroplane was about to take off for Italy. Air traffic controllers raised the alarm, and the incoming flight was forced to abort its landing and circle for 20 minutes eventually landing at 9pm. Passengers were unaware of the incident which has just come to light weeks later, following an investigation by aviation authorities for a breach in security and safety measures. 

Technical issue - Meanwhile, a technical issue at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport has caused flight cancellations and delays. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, with 14 flights cancelled and others delayed, affecting, in particular, flights from Corsica and Marseille. The problem was due to a radio antenna struck by lightning, disrupting air traffic in the Southeast region. The issue was resolved by late afternoon, but some delays persisted, and passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updates.

Cannes launches campaign for public health following bad weather - The city of Cannes has launched a mosquito and rodent control campaign in a neighbourhood affected by the bad weather on Monday.  The République neighbourhood, which was badly hit yesterday is concerned and the objective is to protect the population and guarantee public health. Other similar operations may be deployed if necessary.

Swimming ban - Meanwhile, the town council of Fréjus has introduced a swimming ban until further notice on two of its beaches. The ban came into effect at around 6pm on Tuesday evening and concerns Fréjus-Plage and Galiote beach (located in Saint-Aygulf, to the west of the city). The reason is believed to have been again the bad weather which hit the region at the beginning of the week.

Motorway works near Toulon in the Var - Traffic is to be reduced to three-lanes in the coming months on the A57 motorway near Toulon in the Var. Motorway works, which should be completed in the first quarter of 2025, have been ongoing since April 2021. The speed limit remains at 70 km/h, the radars are still very much present, and the size of the lanes remains reduced.

Telephones in British School of Monaco - The British School of Monaco has partnered with Monaco Telecom to offer a refurbished Nokia 3210, without internet or social media access, to help protect students from the dangers of smartphones. Parents can purchase the phone for just one euro, with a monthly plan of €8.99 for unlimited calls and texts. The initiative aims to promote digital disconnection and reduce the risks associated with screen addiction among adolescents.

Prince’s Place and Yacht Club of Monaco will be lit up in blue tomorrow evening - The Prince's Palace and the Yacht Club of Monaco will be lit up in blue this Thursday evening to mark World Maritime Day and the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is organizing a World Maritime Day this Thursday with the theme "Navigating towards the future: safety first!". The theme has been chosen in light of the importance of maritime safety and security as well as the protection of the marine environment in the work of the IMO.

AS Monaco new kit for 100th anniversary – Finally, the Principality’s football team AS Monaco are to unveil a special new kit for the club's 100th anniversary. The club is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary this Saturday evening against Montpellier kick off is at 9pm and for the occasion, the players will wear a collector's kit that is inspired by the first kit worn back in 1924 by the Principality's footballers. Various festivities are also planned at Stade Louis-II. The new kit will be available on the AS Monaco website and at the official store from today at 10am costing at least 90 euros.

Business

The US has filed a lawsuit against Visa, accusing is of debit card monopoly. The financial giant is suspected of illegally stifling competition. It said Visa had punished companies that wanted to use alternative payment networks and paid off potential competitors to keep its hold over the market. The Department of Justice said the moves had slowed innovation and led to significant additional fees for American consumers and businesses. In response Visa have said that the claims were "meritless" and it would defend itself in court.

According to reports the French government is reconsidering the reform to unemployment benefits. The new Barnier government could well abandon the reform which has been left pending by its predecessors. Negotiations are expected in the coming weeks and while the government may agree to scrapping the reform, it is demanding that the estimated savings of 3.5 billion euros which was expected from the reform, be generated elsewhere. The reform had aimed at tightening conditions for unemployment rights in France, such as extending the period worked in order to receive compensation.

And - France’s SNCF train company has announced plans in partnership with Germany rail deutsche Bahn to create a high-speed rail network between Paris and Berlin. A first in the history of train travel between the two countries the line is to be up and running for December 16th. The eight-hour journey will have one stop in France at Strasbourg and two in Germany, with tickets starting at 59 euros for 2nd class and 69 euros in first class.

Sport

Football – The Uefa has reopened the bidding for stadiums to host the 2027 Champions League final, after the match was stripped from Milan. The new host stadium for the 2027 final is expected to be announced in May or June 2025.

Formula One – The Red Bull team have announced that their head of race strategy Will Courtenay will be leaving the team after 14 years to join McLaren as sporting director. The move makes Courtenay the third member of Red Bull senior management to leave the team in the past five months and is the latest development in an ongoing restructure at McLaren.

Cricket – The minimum starting salaries will be equal for men and women in domestic cricket from next year according to the sports governing body. The women’s domestic structure is being revamped from next season, with eight first-class counties hosting Tier 1 teams, rising to nine in 2026 and 10 in 2027.
