Eiffel Tower turns off its lights as a tribute - The lights of the Eiffel Tower in Paris have been turned off as a tribute to the victims of the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7th, of last year.The lights went off at 11.45pm on Monday night as Paris city hall called for peace. The mayor Anne Hidalgo says that she continues to show her “commitment to a two-state solution, in the search of a peaceful solution for Israeli citizens as well as for the Palestinian and Lebanese civilian populations”.

Bad weather – In other news, Météo France has placed the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var departments on an orange rain flood alert until 2pm this afternoon and a yellow storm alert until 6pm this Tuesday evening. At 5am this morning 4mm of rain had accumulated in Saint-Etienne de Tinée and 1mm in Saint-Martin Vésubie. The intense period of rain is expected between 7am and 11am. An easterly wind is forecast along the coast with gusts of around 40 and 50 km/h possible reaching 70 km/h in places. The Ligne d’Azur transport network is, for the time being, operating as normal. The public is reminded that all parks, gardens and coastal paths are closed as well as schools and nurseries, with school transport suspended. In Monaco schools however, remain open. Ski resort not to reopen due to lack of funds and snowfall - A ski resort in the Isère region of France has announced its closure. Local officials have voted not to reopen "Alpe du Grand Serre" due to lack of funds and a shrinking ski season due to the lack of snow and global warming. Unable to make the resort an all-year round tourist destination the decision to close will wipe out 200 jobs and hit businesses in the nearby village of La Morte.

Flyposting in Nice - You may have seen posters popping up all over Nice notably on lampposts traffic lights and bus shelters, offering to buy all types of vehicles, no matter what their condition. However, the flyers are being illegally stuck in the streets and are thought to possibly lead to questionable practices such as stealing someone’s ID or using fake banknotes for payments in cash. What is certain is that the method referred to as "flyposting", used to promote the business, is illegal and could lead to 7,500 euros fine.  There is also no mandatory information on the posters a part from a telephone number. An investigation into the business practices is still underway.

Adidas store in Nice sells off stock at discount prices - Sportswear shop Adidas, in the Nice étoile shopping centre, is selling off its stock at low prices before moving. The store will remain in Nice Etoile offering a bigger premises planned for November. The discounts are on offer until Friday, November 15th, 2024.

Local market to change location - The local market in Peymeinade which is held on Monday morning's on the Place du Centenaire is to move to the Saint Marc car park. The local council voted in favour of the move on Monday with the goal of revitalising the market, making it more visible and safer, as it is currently crossed by a road which is not closed to traffic.

New study reveals the most expensive neighbourhoods of Nice - According to a new study from SeLoger.com Mont Boron, Rue de France and Vinaigrier are the three most expensive neighbourhoods in Nice for those looking to buy property. To invest in a home in Nice, you need to count on average of 5,207 euros per square meter, placing the Côte d'Azur capital as the second most expensive in France, behind Paris and ahead of Lyon. Despite a general drop in apartment prices in the ten largest cities in France (-1.7% over one year), Nice stands out with a slight increase of +1% in one year.  Demand has supported these price increases with an increase of almost +4% in the number of potential buyers compared to the previous year after a drastic drop in the second half of last year. 

Framework Cooperation Agreement signed between Monaco and the Republic of Burundi - On the sidelines of the 19th Francophonie Summit, a Framework Cooperation Agreement has been signed between Monaco and the Republic of Burundi. This agreement aims to deepen relations, the friendship and cooperation with Burundi, a historic partner country of the Monegasque Cooperation. As a reminder, the Prince's Government has been working in Burundi since 2008. With support and partnerships bringing together international organizations and civil society actors to develop synergies between them and ensure the most appropriate response to the country’s needs. The agreement is a way to further formalise the Prince's Government in its commitment alongside the Government of Burundi, in areas such as health, education and child protection, food and nutritional security, and access to decent work. Monaco’s Government Counselor-Minister of External Relations and Cooperation Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, is due to travel to Burundi at the end of this month for a working visit that will allow her to meet with Burundian authorities and cooperation partners as well as to exchange with the beneficiary populations.

Parent, spouse or friend, this is a daily commitment, often silent but nevertheless essential for the person you are caring for, which requires time, energy, stress, and sometimes involves forgetting oneself. Entry to swimming pool free until its annual closure on October 13th – Finally, due to a failure with the heating system for the Stade Nautique Rainier III swimming pool here in the Principality. The Monaco City Hall has announced that as a result, the water in the pool can no longer be heated to 28/29 degrees but is currently around 24 degrees and could cool down depending on the weather conditions. Therefore, entry to the swimming pool of the Stade Nautique Rainier III will be free until Sunday 13th October 2024, its annual closing date. However, equipment (deckchairs, parasols) as well as aquatic courses (aqua gym, aqua bike and swimming lessons) will still be chargeable. A US federal judge has ruled that Google must allow Android apps made by rival technology firms onto its Google Play app store from next month. The change was among several orders in a case brought against Google by Epic Games, the maker of the hit video game Fortnite. Google says it will appeal against the decision. In December, a jury sided with Epic, which says Google stifled competitors by controlling the distribution of apps and payments on Android phones.

A bankruptcy plan which has been approved in the US could see creditors of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX receive up to $16.5bn (£12.6bn). The agreement will put an end to a saga that started when the firm went bankrupt in November 2022, leaving millions of customers around the world without access to their accounts. Last year, former boss Sam Bankman-Fried was convicted of stealing customer funds ahead of the collapse and later sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Football - Manchester City's legal case against the Premier League over rules on commercial deals involving clubs' owners has come to an end with a tribunal delivering its verdict.  Manchester City have claimed a partial victory in a legal fight with the Premier League over commercial rules governing clubs, including two large sponsorship deals the club was blocked from completing.

Cycling – Katie Archibald will return to action at this month's Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark after recovering from the freak injury that ruled her out of the Olympics. 30 year old Archibald, broke two bones in her leg and tore ligaments off the bone after tripping over a step in her garden in June. She is joined in the 23-strong squad by 11 Olympic medallists from this summer's Games in Paris.

Darts - Luke Littler has suffered a first-round exit to Rob Cross on his World Grand Prix debut on a dramatic opening night in Leicester. 17-year-old Littler who has won nine titles in as many months in 2024 amid a stunning start to his professional darts career, was appearing for the first time in the double-start event but lost 2-1 to Cross, the 2018 world champion and No 4 seed.
