Weather warning - The Alpes-Maritimes has once again been placed on a yellow weather alert this Thursday, due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Just three days after storms caused major flooding in Cannes the region is preparing itself for more bad weather. According to forecasts thunderstorms are expected to break out in the afternoon along the coast. The warning is in place until midnight tonight.

22-year-old woman killed after being hit by a train - A 22-year-old woman has died after being hit by a train in Solliès-Pont in the Var. The accident occurred at around 2pm on Wednesday. The exact circumstances remain unclear. Rail traffic was interrupted between Toulon and Les Arcs-Draguignan, in both directions. The SNCF announced a return to normal at around 5:30 p.m.

Poll shows 6 out of 10 French people are unhappy with new government - In other news, according to a recent poll six out of ten French people are unhappy with the new government. 59% say they are unhappy with Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government, which they believe does not reflect the result of the parliamentary elections of July 7th. The poll carried out by Elabe for BFMTV showed that in terms of efficiency, little credit is given to the new government on purchasing power with just 21% thinking it will be efficient. However, those surveyed did praise the firmness of the new Interior Minister, right-wing republican Bruno Retailleau. Around 69% of those surveyed agree that new laws are needed to deal with immigration.

Bed bugs in A&E department - The A&E department of the Sainte-Musse hospital in Toulon in the Var has reported bedbugs. The management of the establishment confirmed two cases of bedbugs within the hospital and has told authorities that the appropriate preventive measures have since been taken and the situation is being closely monitored.

HPV Vaccine - A new HPV vaccination campaign will launch in October for 5th-grade students in French middle schools to protect against HPV-related cancers. The campaign aims to vaccinate children before potential exposure to the virus, requiring two doses—one in late 2024 and another in spring 2025. In the Alpes-Maritimes, 83 schools are participating, with parental consent required. The goal is to increase vaccination coverage, which remains low despite HPV's link to multiple cancers.

Monaco Yacht Show - The Monaco Yacht Show 2024 has begun here on the port of Monaco. The show is on until Saturday and will feature conferences on yachting design, sustainability, and innovations. Prince's Palace and Monaco Yacht Club to Light in Blue this Evening - The Prince's Palace and the Yacht Club of Monaco will be illuminated in blue this evening to celebrate World Maritime Day and the 50th anniversary of the SOLAS Convention. This year's theme, "Navigating towards the future: safety first!", highlights the importance of maritime safety, security, and marine environmental protection, as emphasized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $7bn loan to Pakistan. The cash-strapped country is due to receive the first $1bn of the loan immediately, with the balance to be paid out over the next three years. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the decision and thanked the head of the IMF and her team. Pakistan has taken more than 20 loans from the IMF since 1958 and is currently its fifth-largest debtor.

And – According to reports Elon Musk, has not been invited to the UK government's International Investment Summit in response to his social media posts during last month’s riots. The billionaire and tech entrepreneur posted on X predicting civil war in the UK and repeatedly attacked the Prime Minister after violence spread across the UK following a stabbing attack in Southport, in which three children attending a dance class were killed. The summit in October is the key moment that PM Keir Starmer hopes to attract tens of billions in inward funding for business from the world’s biggest investors.

Sport

Football - Liverpool began their defence of the League Cup by coming from behind to thrash West Ham at Anfield 5-1 on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Arsenal also cruised to a 5-1 victory over League One Bolton to reach the fourth round.

Cricket – England’s cricket team say that captain Ben Stokes is "on track" to participate in the series against Pakistan, which begins in 12 days. The all-rounder has been out of action since he suffered a hamstring injury playing in The Hundred for Northern Superchargers at the beginning of August.
