Back to school - It’s back to school in France this week with several new measures expected, but still a lot of uncertainty, as announced reforms will depend on the future government which is not yet in place. Three teachers' unions have called for a strike in schools on September 10th to denounce certain new measures planned. Meanwhile, in the search for a new Prime Minister French President Emmanuel Macron is to meet today with former Prime Minister under Francois Hollande, Bernard Cazeneuve. Macron will also hold talks with former President François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.

7-year-old girl dies from her injuries - The 7-year-old girl hit by a motorcyclist in Vallauris last week has since sadly died from her injuries. Some 200 people from the neighbourhood gathered on Sunday evening at Le Hameau de Vallauris residence to pay tribute. 7-year-old Kamilya was hit by a motorcyclist on Thursday evening, while she was crossing a zebra crossing with her 11-year-old brother not far from her home.  The 19-year-old motorcyclist was reportedly performing an “urban rodeo” at the time which involves carrying out high-speed stunts known as “urban rodeos” in France.  The police custody of the suspect was lifted on Saturday, and he was placed under judicial supervision, the prosecution announced that it would appeal this decision. At the gathering her father wanted to thank all the people who showed their support, but also the medical staff who took care of his little girl. In a Facebook post, however, the victim's father did not thank the French justice system saying, “it was crazy that people can drive as dangerously as they wish on the roads and kill”.

Man, seriously injured after fall from electric scooter - A man in his forties has been seriously injured after falling from his electric scooter. The incident occurred in Cimiez shortly after 2pm on Sunday when the victim was found unconscious by the emergency services and taken to hospital. Nobody else seems to have been involved in the accident an investigation is underway and police have appealed for any witnesses.

Woman tries to run over her stepdaughter - A fifty-three-year-old woman has been placed in police custody after attempting to run over her stepdaughter. The incident occurred in the Vésubie Valley on Saturday evening. Police intervened in the town of Valdeblore. The exact circumstances remain to be determined the woman has been hospitalised due to her mental state.

Weather warning - The Alpes-Maritimes and the Var region have been placed on a yellow heatwave and storm alert today Monday 2nd September. While the heatwave continues storms are expected by this afternoon with the alert in place until 8pm this Monday evening.

Business

Brazil's Supreme Court will today vote on whether or not to uphold a ruling to ban social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The vote was called after the platform was suspended in the country in the early hours of Saturday. It came after X failed to appoint a new legal representative in Brazil before a court-imposed deadline. Brazil is said to be one of the largest markets for Mr Musk's social media network.

The UKs education minister has said that the government's plan to ban smoking in pub gardens and other outdoor venues is a "sensible approach" to help people stop. Sir Keir Starmer confirmed leaked reports last week that his government is considering the smoking ban, which would also include outdoor restaurants and outside sports venues, hospitals, nightclubs, and in some small parks. The proposal has been criticised by the Conservatives and others as being a breach of people's freedom, with the government accused of bringing in a nanny state. But education minister Baroness Jacqui Smith said it is a "sensible approach" and will help people "reduce their smoking and would cut the number of people who die every year from smoking-related diseases".

And - Apple's is set to get a firm boost following its partnership with India's second-biggest telecoms firm Airtel. In a market where Apple lags far behind the likes of Spotify and Walt Disney the U.S. technology giant, is working to boost revenue globally from services including apps, payments and media, as well as offer free music and video streaming to many of Airtel's 281 million customers.

Sport

Paralympics - Great Britain celebrated their most successful day at a Paralympic Games this century with 12 gold medals. China remains at the top with 33 gold medals followed by Great Britain with 23, the United States have 8 so do Brazil with France 5th in the ranking with 6 gold medals. Today in the events the Para Triathlon gets underway.

Formula One – Monegasque Charles Leclerc pulled off an extraordinary home win for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix at the weekend. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished sixth, and McLarens Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris took second and third place on the podium. The crowd cheered Leclerc across the line as he took his second victory in Italy for Ferrari, after his first in 2019. Speaking after the race he said it’s an incredible feeling adding that Monaco and Monza are the two races her wants to win every year.

Football – In the Premier League on Sunday Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-0. Speaking after the match Mohamed Salah said that he had treated the match as if it was his last at Old Trafford. Salah says it is his "last year" at Liverpool and that nobody at the club has talked to him about a new contract. The 32-year-old, current deal at Anfield is set to expire next summer. Meanwhile the Chelsea, who thrashed Wolves 6-2 last week managed a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace and Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-1.

Cricket – England won by 190 runs against Sri Lanka. It was Gus Atkinson’s five-wicket haul which eventually broke Sri Lanka’s resistance to give England victory in the second Test and the series with a match to spare. The final Test at The Oval begins on Friday, with England looking for their first 100% Test summer since they earned seven wins in 2004.

Tennis - Coco Gauff's US Open title defence is over after she was beaten by Emma Navarro in the fourth round in New York. Gauff lost 6-3 4-6 6-3 to fellow American and 13th seed Navarro.

Golf - Scottie Scheffler performed a dominant victory at the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. The American has won an Olympic gold medal, his second Masters and become the first to land successive Players Championship titles. He is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007 to win seven events in a PGA Tour season.

The outlook for tomorrow unsettled with sunny spells and scattered showers in places. Highs of 28 degrees. Wednesday mainly fine, clouding over by the afternoon temperatures remaining the same.
