National News

Weather warning - Central and Northeastern France has been placed on an orange weather alert with thunderstorms forecast. The warning is in place from 3pm this Monday afternoon. In total 22 departments are on alert due to heavy rain and strong winds. The warning is in place until tomorrow morning.

Global warming report - Meanwhile, in a report published today Monday 15th July, the NGO Oxfam France has denounced a lack of measures to prevent global warming in France. The report entitled "Climate change: we are not ready", compiles dozens of studies on global warming and estimates that due to the lack of measures global warming will reinforce inequalities. According to the study almost one in two French people consider climate change as an imminent threat to their way of life. Oxfam is calling for several tens of billions of euros of public measures to be introduced. The French government's third national climate change adaptation plan was suspended by the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Luxury watch thefts continue in Cannes - The city of Cannes has reported three more luxury watch thefts this weekend. Committed on the same evening on the Croisette, two suspects have since been arrested. Since the start of the tourist season there has been a rise in thefts of luxury watches and now the city council has decided to put in place a specific plan with better cooperation between police services, the use of drones and the possibility of road closure in the event of a theft. The thefts on Saturday evening were carried out by two individuals on a scooter. Watches worth 200,000 euros were stolen.

New Footbridge Opened in Monaco - The Wurtemberg footbridge has opened in Monaco. This 65-meter crossing connects the new 1,790-space Jardin Exotique parking garage to the Fontvieille and Condamine districts.

Croix-Rouge Monégasque - In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Croix-Rouge of Monaco, a Hermes bag has been sold for €75,000 to benefit the association. The winning bidder has been invited to attend the association’s gala on July 19th at Monaco’s Sporting Club.

Centenary Oak in Nice - An oak tree, planted in 1869, has been removed from Place Garibaldi in Nice. The iconic tree was part of the city's 188,000 monitored trees. Experts observed signs of exhaustion in the oak, prompting the city council to act due to the risk of it breaking in strong winds. It will be replaced it in the autumn.

Watering- With the higher temperatures and the first drought alerts issued in some parts of our region gardeners still able to water their gardens are being advised to do so either early in the morning or early evening and to avoid watering plants during the day.  

Catapulting championship - Finally, a childhood memory for some and a sport for others. For the very first time, France is organizing the European Championships in catapulting at the end of July in Brignoles, in the Var. The three biggest French clubs are located in the PACA region with the Barjols club being the largest in France. The challenge for the French Federation is to be able to compete against the Spanish. The event is on from July 26th to 28th.

Business

Investors have said that Saturday's shooting at former U.S. President Donald Trump’s election rally has raised his odds of winning back the White House and are betting on his victory increasing. Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania in what authorities are treating as an assassination attempt. His face spattered with blood, Trump pumped his fist moments after the attack saying he was fine after the incident.

Hackers have stolen call and text records data from "nearly all" of 109 million AT&T Wireless customers. The firm said one suspect had been arrested after the records, from May to October 2022, were illegally downloaded and copied to a third-party platform this April. The company said that the stolen data did not contain the content of calls or texts, but did record the numbers contacted, as well as the number and lengths of interactions before adding that they “sincerely regretted that the incident occurred” and remain committed to protecting the information in their care.

Sport

Football – Spain’s Euro 2024 was fully deserved. Gareth Southgate's side were beaten 2-1 leaving England’s men's team without a major trophy since triumphing at the 1966 World Cup. Captain Harry Kane said that England's defeat by Spain in the final of Euro 2024 will "hurt for a long time".

Tennis - Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic to retain his men's singles title at Wimbledon. Later on Sunday evening, Alcaraz celebrated Spain's Euro 2024 final victory over England - making it a perfect day for him and his country.

Cycling - Tadej Pogacar took a huge step towards reclaiming the Tour de France title as he secured a second straight stage win during stage 14. British sprinter Mark Cavendish, the Tour's all-time stage record-holder with 35, made the cut-off time with less than two minutes to spare to keep alive his hopes of securing a final stage win in his farewell to the race. Today is rest day.
