Rainfall - One month’s worth of rain has fallen in just one night. During the recent Mediterranean episodes in the Alpes Maritimes the town of Lucéram northeast of Nice was hit by the bad weather.  Between Tuesday, October 8th and Thursday, October 10th, 2024, almost the equivalent of two months worth of rain fell. Located in the Paillons Valley, the town, experienced as much water in the space of a few hours as that of an entire month. Lucéram, recorded a peak of 134 mm between 6 p.m. on Wednesday and 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Disruptions to line 2 tramway due to maintenance work - Due to maintenance work being carried out on Line 2 of the Lignes d'Azur tramway, in Nice. There will be no nighttime service and certain stops will be closed from this Sunday October 13th and for an on off period of four weeks. A bus service will be made available. The works will be carried out on the entire line 2 of the Nice tramway, between the airport, Cadam and Port Lympia.  

In detail - The line 2 is suspended from Sunday 13th to Thursday 17th October, from Sunday 20th to Thursday 24th October, from Monday 28th to Thursday 31st October, from Sunday 3rd to Wednesday 6th November, from 8:42 p.m until the end of service.

The line is suspended from Sunday to Thursday after the following departures :

  • 8:42 p.m. on weekdays and 8:44 p.m on Sundays from CADAM / Centre Administratif towards Port Lympia
  • 8:48 p.m. on weekdays and 8:54 p.m on Sundays from Aéroport Terminal 2 towards Port Lympia
  • 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9:35 p.m on Sundays from Port Lympia towards CADAM / Centre Administratif
  • 8:07 p.m. on weekdays and 8:10 p.m on Sundays from Port Lympia towards Aéroport Terminal 2

Pizza Dough Contaminated - Picard has recalled frozen pizza dough sold across France due to potential contamination with E. coli bacteria. Consumers who purchased the affected product, sold between the 16th of July and the 7th of October are advised not to consume it and return it to the store. E. coli infection can cause diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and vomiting within a week of consumption.

New destination for Nice Airport - Nice International Airport has announced a new destination for next year. From next summer the Côte d'Azur capital will be connected to Washington DC. United Airlines made the announcement on Thursday October 10th, confirming four weekly flights between Nice and Washington DC. Tickets are already on sale on the United Airlines website. You can expect to pay from 1,272 euros to travel to the US capital. On the other hand, from the United States to France, the ticket reportedly starts at 405 euros!

Fashion Festival - The world of fashion has descended on Hyères in the Var, for the 39th fashion festival. The international event opened its doors at the Villa Noailles on Thursday and will run until Sunday. It’s one of the oldest fashion shows and attracts major brands like Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. Many of the previous winners or finalists from the competition held during the festival now occupy key roles in major fashion houses.

Business

Germany, France and the Netherlands have once again announced that their new systems for EU border checks are not ready. The fingerprint and facial scan check system for non-EU citizens at all EU borders was due to be rolled out on November the 10th but has once again been pushed back. The delay is the latest in a long line of setbacks for the system, which was originally meant to be introduced in 2022.

The French energy company EDF is reportedly in talks with investors to raise up to £4bn to finish the delayed Hinkley Point C project in Somerset, Britain’s first new nuclear reactors in a generation. According to Bloomberg the utilities company, owned by the French state, has approached investors to help cover the increasing cost of constructing the nuclear plant, which is understood to have reached almost £50bn.

Furniture retailer Ikea has reported a slump in UK sales for the past year. The company revealed retail sales dropped by 6.8% to £2.3bn for the year to August, compared with the previous financial year, as shoppers held off buying bigger-ticket items. It linked the drop to a "strategic decision to prioritise affordability" as it invested more than £117m into lowering prices over the year for customers hit hardest by the cost-of-living crisis.

And - Ryanair has said it will cut 12% of its traffic through German airports next year in a row with the government there over high location charges. The cuts will result in a loss of 1.8 million seats from the start of the summer flight plan in April 2025. The low-cost airline has said that the move "will be devastating for jobs, tourism and connectivity", calling on Germany's transport minister Volker Wissing and the government "to act immediately to lower access costs and fix Germany's broken air transport system". The airline has repeatedly warned that it would switch capacity to other EU countries if Germany did not meet its demands to reverse an aviation tax increase and reduce air traffic control charges.

Sport

Tennis - Rafael Nadal has been described as a "legend" and "one of the greatest of all time" after he confirmed on Thursday that he will retire at the end of this season. Rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic led the tributes to Spain's 22-time Grand Slam champion, who will compete for the final time at next month's Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. Known as the 'King of Clay' and having won 14 French Open titles, Nadal retires as the second-most successful men's singles player of all time, behind only Djokovic.

Football – In the Nations League Greece beat a dismal England 2-1 for the first time, after a late goal. The Greek players interrupted their celebrations to lift a shirt bearing the name of George Baldock, their former international colleague, who died on Wednesday aged 31. And the Republic of Ireland beat Finland 2-1. In this evening matches Iceland play Wales.

Cycling - Mark Cavendish's final professional race is set to be in Singapore on 9-10 November. The 39-year-old 'Manx Missile' has not competed since he broke the Tour de France stage wins record with his 35th victory in July.  Cavendish, from the Isle of Man, has won 165 races since the start of his professional career in 2005, including the 2011 world road title, while he also won Olympic omnium silver at Rio 2016.
