Forest fire in Vidauban update

Forest fire in Vidauban - 600 hectares have gone up in smoke following a forest fire in Vidauban in the Var. Firefighters are still working on site to put out the flames but, the fire has not spread. Evacuated residents have been able to return to their homes. The fire, which broke out on Tuesday at around 3pm in the town of Vidauban, has now reached the town of the Garde-Freinet. At 10am this Wednesday morning it had destroyed a total of 600 hectares in the Maures massif.

Strong winds which fanned the fire did drop overnight leaving a favourable situation this morning. However, the weather forecasts announce the return of strong winds this afternoon. Three water bomber planes circled the site this Wednesday morning and numerous reinforcements from firefighters also arrived. In total, the fire has mobilized 600 firefighters and 190 vehicles, coming from Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-Maritimes, Vaucluse, Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Drôme, Alpes- de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes.

As far as traffic is concerned the RD72 is still closed to traffic between Vidauban and Plan de la Tour and the RD48 is only accessible to local residents. The fire did not cause any casualties.
