The first results of an investigation into the death of a teenager at Le-Cannet-des-Maures railway station in the Var have been released. The investigation has shown that the 18 year old woman's scooter got stuck in the railway tracks in the path of an oncoming TGV train. The accident happened last Saturday afternoon. The prosecutor's office said that psychological support has been provided to witnesses.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Health Agency has said that epidemic indicators of bronchiolitis are on the rise. However, it said that so far the epidemic in our region is similar to previous years in terms of severity and timing. There were 498 visits to hospital emergency departments for bronchiolitis recorded last week against 469 in the previous week. The number of hospitalizations for the condition in children under 2 years old is increasing with 194 admissions last week against 164 in the previous week.

 A 63 year old man has been charged in connection with the death of a hunter in the Vaucluse department. Reports say that a dozen people were involved in the deer hunt near the commune of Monieux at the weekend when the man was shot. An investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Two people have died after a motorboat capsized near the finish of the Route du Rhum transatlantic sailing race off Guadeloupe. Organizers said that eleven people were on the follower boat when it overturned. Two people, who were part of the organising team couldn't be saved by rescuers.

Beaulieu-sur-Mer has become the latest municipality to launch a carpooling scheme. A Facebook page is available to enable people to consult and post messages  to organize carpooling to or from the town. It's a public Facebbok page called "Co-voiturage Beaulieu-sur-Mer". https://www.facebook.com/groups/covoiturage06310/

A modernised service area on the A57 motorway has been officially opened today. La Chaberte services is located on the motorway near to Toulon. After a year of modernization work, the rest area now offers users of the A57 an expanded and enriched range of services.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation in the UK has risen to its highest level in 41 years. The Consumer Prices Index rose by 11.1% in the 12 months to October, up from 10.1% in September. Food price inflation hit 16.2% in the year to October. Despite the introduction of the UK government's Energy Price Guarantee, gas and electricity prices made the largest upward contribution to the change in the annual inflation rate between September and October. However, transport costs, mainly fuel and second-hand car prices, made the largest, partially offsetting, downward contribution.

Staff on a number of North Sea oil and gas installations are staging industrial action over pay levels. The Unite union said that almost 150 of its members are involved. The action involves a continuous overtime ban and a 48-hour stoppage today and tomorrow. Another two day strike is due to begin at the end of the month.

The UK’s first orbital space launch has moved one step closer to take-off as Spaceport Cornwall received the UK’s first ever spaceport licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. Spaceport Cornwall, based at Cornwall Airport Newquay, has demonstrated to the regulator that it has met the appropriate safety, security, environment and other aspects to operate a UK spaceport. Several other licences are still needed before the launch, operated by Virgin Oribit, can go ahead.

 

SPORT

Football...  The England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland football associations have submitted a list of potential stadiums in their bid to host Euro 2028. Everton's new stadium is one of 14 venues in the UK and Republic of Ireland's bid dossier for hosting the tournament. Everton's Stadium, which is still being built is on the list, as is Belfast's new Casement Park Stadium although work has not yet started on the site. The five football associations have to submit a final list of ten stadiums to Uefa in April next year.

Former England and Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has retired at the age of 36. He also played for Aston Villa, Bolton, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. He earned 61 international caps in his career.

Cricket... Ireland have beaten Pakistan by 34 runs in the women's T20 series decider to claim their first series victory overseas. Opener Gaby Lewis hit 71.
