Three departments in north-west France are on Meteo France red alerts for tomorrow as Storm Ciaran moves into the area. They are Côtes d'Armor, Finistère and Manche. Many other departments in the north-west are on orange warnings. Meteo France said that the storm will approach north-western regions during the night tonight and will continue during the morning of Thursday. Peak winds of 150 to 170 km/h could be recorded and high waves and coastal flooding are expected.

In our region, The Alpes-Maritimes and the Var are under a yellow warning for storms from midday to 8pm tomorrow. The Alpes-Maritimes has a yellow warning for heavy rain and flooding from 10am to 8pm tomorrow. The Var is under an orange warning for high waves and coastal flooding from 10am to midnight tomorrow. The Alpes Maritimes is also under an orange warning for high waves and coastal flooding from 2pm to midnight tomorrow, and that's preceded by a yellow warning from 10am. The French Senate has launched a commission of inquiry into drugs trafficking. The commission's aims are to determine the extent of trafficking and it's place in the "crime ecosystem" as well as to propose measures to combat it, according to the Republican group in the Senate. It's members will be appointed next week. The establishment of the commission had been called for by elected officials and community groups in Marseille, which has seen a wave of killings in the drugs dealing community.

The cost of seeing a doctor in France has risen from today. The rise, to 26.50 euros to see a GP who does not charge excess fees, has been planned for several months after arbitration to settle industrial action by doctors. Unions representing members of the profession have said that the figure should be 30 euros to take account of inflation and negotiations for a further rise will take place in the coming days.

A truck caught fire on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice this morning. The vehicle burst in to flames just before 8am near the airport. Firefighters atttended the scene and there were no injuries reported.

The Principality of Monaco has taken part in the 51st session of the Committee on World Food Security. The gathering in Rome brought together 126 member states and nearly 1,500 participants. The organization estimates that on average 735 million people, or 9.2% of the world population, will have suffered from hunger in 2022, a figure well above pre-pandemic levels.

A new survey has revealed that 31% of French people believe in life after death. The Ifop survey questioned 1,000 people on their beliefs regarding the afterlife. 36%of people are of the opinion that there is no life after death and one third of respodents were unsure. The number believing in an afterlife has fallen by 6% since 1970 but is unchanged since a similar survey in 2018. Signficantly more people below the age of 35 say that there is life afer death than those above that age.


BUSINESS

UK manufacturing contracted at the start of the final quarter according to a newly released survey of purchasing managers. S&P Global said that October saw output, new orders and employment all decline. It said that there were reports that difficult and uncertain market conditions led to increased caution among both manufacturers and their customers.

US private sector payroll jobs rose by 113,000 last month, which was less than expected. However, the numbers, released this afternoon by payroll company ADP, were still up from the 89,000 recorded in September.

 

SPORT

Cricket... South Africa have beaten New Zealand by 190 runs in their World Cup match. New Zealand were 167 all out. South Africa were 357 - for 4.

Australia's Glenn Maxwell will miss Saturday's World Cup match against England because of injury. He suffered concussion after falling off the back of a golf buggy. The incident happened on Monday as Australia's squad played a round of golf on a day off from the tournament. Australia say that it is hoped he'll be able to play later in the tournament.

Cycling...Dutch rider Jeffrey Hoogland has set a new men's 1km time trial world record. He beat the previous record, set by French cyclist Francois Pervis back in 2013, by almost one second.
