Evening Update Monday 25 October 2021

Tributes have been paid to Jean-Claude Guibal, the Mayor of Menton, who died suddenly this morning at the age of 80. He had held the post of mayor since 1989. He was also a former member of the National Assembly representing the 4th constituency of the Alpes-Maritimes. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that his wisdom "brought so much to the political life of our department". Mayor of Antibes Jean Leonetti said that he would remember Jean-Claude Guibal as an intelligent and moderate man who dedicated his life to his city. Mayor of Cannes David Lisnard said that he remembered a "pro-active parliamentarian, with a keen eye on economic issues". A moment of silence was observed at midday today in the Place de la Mairie in Menton.

The Monaco government has said that a 76-year-old resident who tested positive for Covid-19 has died. It's the 36th coronavirus-related death since the start of the epidemic in the Principality. As of yesterday evening, 6 patients, all non-residents, were being treated for Covid-19 at the Princesse Grace Hospital.

La Seyne-sur-Mer has become the first town in the Var to be awarded the status of  "Cité de l'emploi" by the French state. It will enable La Seyne to recruit a local coordinator and will finance measures aimed at groups who are not in employment.

Genesis have announced concert dates in Paris for their final tour. The band will play at La Defense Arena on 16 and 17 March next year.

 

BUSINESS

The Australian government and telecoms company Telstra are buying a Pacific telecoms business in a joint venture. Digicel Pacific employs 1,700 people in several Pacific nations. The joint venture is being viewed as a political move to counter China's influence in the region.

Business confidence in Germany has fallen according to a new survey. The ifo business climate index fell to 97.7 in October, from 98.9 in September. Ifo said that delivery bottlenecks continued to affect German businesses and capacity utilization in industry is falling.

 

SPORT

Cricket.. Ben Stokes has been included in the England squad for the Ashes Test series in Australia. Stokes has been recovering from a second operation on a finger which he injured whilst playing in the Indian Premier League in April. He's now been given the all-clear to resume playing.

Rugby League.. Brian McDermott has been appointed head coach at Featherstone Rovers for 2022. He formerly played with Bradford and then moved into coaching at Harlequins, Leeds Rhinos, and Toronto.
