Evening Update Monday 19 June 2023

Investigations are continuing after the crash of a small plane in the Var at the weekend. The crash, in a forest near Pignans, claimed the lives of three people. The prosecutor of Draguignan said today that the investigation to determine the cause of the accident could take several weeks or even several months. The prosecutor said that the plane had taken off from Cuers. The investigation is being carried out by the air transport gendarmerie brigade, which said that it was visiting the site of the crash today.

Several people have been injured in two separate shootings in Marseille last night. Two of the injured are in a serious condition. The shootings are the latest in a wave of violence to have affected the northern districts of the city this year in connection with drugs dealing.

A large number of departments in France are under Meteo France Orange warnings for storms. The band of affected departments stretches across central France from the Charante-Maritime in the west to the Moselle in the east. Severe storms hit much of northern France including Paris yesterday.

The French government has said that it's going to collect data on visitors to certain attractions which are receiving an excess number of people. Speaking to Le Figaro, Minister Delegate for Small and Medium Enterprise, Trade, Craft and Tourism, Olivia Gregoire said that data needs to be collected because there are places where an influx of tourists sometimes poses a threat to the preservation of the destinations themselves.

A missing person has been found safe and sound in the Var this afternoon. 16 year old Jasmine Dinar, who is from the Lyon area and is on holiday in La Seyne sur Mer had been missing since yesterday evening.  

The prefect of the Var has inaugurated new premises of the departmental Direction of Employment, Labour and Solidarity in Toulon. The new premises enable all services to be grouped together.

The Paris Air Show has been getting underway today. The 54th edition of the Show is taking place at Le Bourget Parc des Expositions and brings together the major global players in the air industry. The first four days of the Show are reserved for trade visitors, followed by three days open to the general public. 

 

BUSINESS

Antony Blinken has finished a visit to China during which he met Xi Jinping. The US Secretary of State said that he'd had "an important conversation" with the Chinese leader and that the exchange was candid. He said that during their 35 minute meeting they had both agreed that communication at a high level is the best way to manage the two countries' differences and "ensure competition does not veer into conflict".

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that his priority is to halve inflation by the end of the year. Speaking on UK television this morning he said that “that is the best and most important way that we can keep costs and interest rates down for people." His remarks come on the day that the average two-year fixed mortgage deal in the UK rose to more than 6%. Lenders have been putting up rates and pulling deals in the UK in recent weeks, driving up costs for homeowners seeking new mortgages.

 

SPORT

Football...Bournemouth have sacked Gary O'Neil less than seven months after he was appointed as the club's permanent manager. He won 10 of the club's 34 Premier League games in charge last season.

Rugby Union... Ollie Hassell-Collins has been dropped from England's World Cup training squad. He made his debut in the Six Nations in February and played in two of England's five matches. Ben Spencer and Harry Randall have also been dropped. Ben Youngs, Jack van Poortvliet and Alex Mitchell are all included.

Horse Racing.... A new three-year study which aims to reduce injuries in horse racing has been announced. The Horse Welfare Board said that the work will help improve the safety and welfare of racehorses. It said data would be analysed to help determine factors that influence the risk of injuries. The move comes after activist group Animal Rising staged protests at several major races over horse welfare.
