Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has accompanied municipal police officers on a tour of the city as part of the enforcement of the curfew order for minors which came into force on Wednesday. In a post on social media, the mayor said that the curfew “is not against young people, it's to protect them”. The curfew applies until the end of August from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. for unaccompanied under-13 year olds, in several areas of Nice. In the Moulins district where there has been a high level of drugs related crime, those under 16 years old are also subject to a curfew, according to the mayor. He added that security forces will escort the minors home, the parents will be notified and, in the event of proven neglect, the prosecutor will be alerted.

The port of Saint-Laurent-du-Var remains closed to boats as the clear-up operation and investigation continues after the serious fire on Wednesday evening. The blaze, which destroyed several boats, is reported to have caused damage estimated at several hundred thousand euros.

The National Police in the Var have today released details of what they referred to as “a vast police operation” in Toulon on 23 April. The National Police said that the operation resulted in the arrest of the heads of the drug trafficking network at the Pontcarral residence. The searches led to the seizure of 1.2kg of cocaine, 2.3kg of cannabis resin, 3 motor vehicles and €67,000 in cash. Four individuals were arrested.

Meanwhile, a teenager has been injured in a drugs related shooting in Aix-en-Provence. Local reports say that the shooting took place at a dealing point yesterday evening. The 14 year old was admitted to hospital but isn’t in a serious condition.

SNCF security staff in Paris have been attacked by a man wielding an axe. The incident took place last night in the 13th arrondissement in the south of the city. Four SNCF security personnel were leaving a metro station in a vehicle when the man attacked them. Two of the officers opened fire. The attacker is in a serious condition in hospital.

 

BUSINESS

Global food prices increased last month, according to the United Nations Food Agency. It’s index of global food prices rose in April for the second consecutive month. Meat and cereal products rose but dairy products and sugar both fell. Despite the rises in March and April, overall food prices are almost ten per cent below their level of a year ago.

The services sector in the UK experienced significant growth last month according to a widely watched survey of purchasing managers by S&P Global. Activity rose at its fastest rate for eleven months. However, the hiring of staff remained subdued, with some managers reporting difficulties in hiring suitable staff. Input cost inflation was at its highest since August 2023

 

SPORT

Lewis Ludlam is set to miss Northampton Saints’ match  against Leinster tomorrow. He’s suffering from a shoulder injury. Courtney Lawes will instead captain Northampton in the match at Croke Park in Dublin. Ollie Sleightholme is also out because of concussion.

Cricket…. England have named their women’s team squad for the series against Pakistan. Linsey Smith and Freya Kemp are included but Tammy Beaumont is only selected in the one-day squad, while Sophia Dunkley has been left out. England play three T20s and three one-day internationals starting on 11 May.

Football… Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has criticised the scheduling of Premiership matches. In a press conference today he said that the scheduling was "absolutely insane". Klopp has frequently criticised the 12.30pm kick-off time.
