Evening Update Friday 26 August 2022

Two people have lost their lives in a boating accident in the Var. The Maritime Prefect said that their boat sank after running aground. A semi-rigid craft from the lifeboat station at La Londe was launched. CrossMed were informed that four people had been rescued by various ships in the area, two were safe and brought back to the port of La Londe. However, the lives of the other two people, a man and a woman in their seventies, could not be saved despite resuscitation attempts.

The Prefect of the Var has said that since August 9, more than 200 checks have been carried out in the department in the continuing operation across France to reduce so-called urban rodeos. Almost 2,200 people were checked by police, more than 300 tickets were issued and 17 vehicles were seized.

French government roads monitor Bison Fute is forecasting a busy weekend on the nation's roads. Today, and tomorrow are red in the direction of returns. Tomorrow the south-east of France is yellow in the direction of departures. More information is available on www.bison-fute.gouv.fr

President Macron has responded to comments made by UK foreign secretary Liz Truss regarding UK French relations. The Conservative Party leadership contender had said at a hustings meeting that she would judge the president on "his deeds not words" and "the jury's out" on whether he's a friend or enemy of the UK. Speaking on Franceinfo President Macron responded that the UK "is a friend of France" and "it is a friend, strong and allied, whoever its leaders are, and sometimes in spite of the leaders, and the small mistakes they can make in their speeches".

 

BUSINESS

The British energy regulator has announced a large increase in the price cap which limits how much providers can charge customers in England, Scotland and Wales. Ofgem said that the typical household energy bill in the UK will rise to £3,549 a year from 1 October. The cap is currently £1,971 for the average household.

California is to ban the sale of new petrol-only vehicles by 2035. Under rules issued by the California Air Resources Board, 35% of new vehicles sold in the state must be electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered by 2026. The percentage will rise to 68% of vehicle sales by 2030, and 100% by 2035.

 

SPORT

Cricket... It's day two of the second test between England and South Africa.

Football.. The draw for the Europa League group stage has been made. Manchester United will play Real Sociedad while Arsenal will face former champions PSV Eindhoven. Manchester United will also play FC Sheriff and Omonia Nicosia in Group E.

Motorsports... Audi is to make its debut in Formula 1 in 2026. The chairman of the car company's board said that it had officially registered as a power-unit manufacturer in F1. Audi has not said if it will run its own team or simply supply engines but said it would make further announcements before the end of the year.
