Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival - The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival gets underway today, with 22 films in competition for the Palme d’Or, and many stars expected for twelve days, until May 25th. Meryl Streep will receive an honorary Palme d’Or this Tuesday evening. While in the past a Palme d’Or rewarded an artistic work, each year the Palmes d’honour celebrate personalities from cinema. This Tuesday evening, during the opening ceremony, Meryl Streep will receive the award which will be added to her three Oscars, obtained for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice and The Iron Lady. The festival organsisers say they are delighted with her presence, adding that the actress "has lived through nearly 50 years of cinema and is part of our collective imagination within the world of cinema”. Chaired by Greta Gerwig, the competition jury is focusing more than ever on diversity. It is therefore difficult to know what trend will emerge on May 25, during the closing ceremony.
