Cannes Film Festival 2023

Cannes Film Festival - Organisers of the Cannes Film Festival have announced that Swedish director Ruben Östlund will be the president of the jury for this year’s 76th edition. Östlund is one of eight filmmakers in the world who have won two Palmes d'Or and he succeeds Vincent Lindon for this year’s festival which takes place from May 16th to 27th. In a statement the filmmaker said "I am happy, proud and humbled to be entrusted with the honour of presiding over the Cannes Film Festival jury this year”.

Ruben Östlund rose to international fame in 2014 with Snow Therapy, a film that blasts the modern family with a father fleeing an avalanche, his mobile phone in his hand, leaving his wife and children in danger. This tragicomedy won the director the jury prize in the Un Certain regard category at Cannes. In 2017, the Swede made the public at the Palais des Festivals shout with joy by winning the Palme d'Or for The Square. The film told the story of the director of a museum of contemporary art who is preparing an exhibition on tolerance but who comes up against his own limits of openness.

Five years later, Ruben Östlund returned to the Croisette with Sans Filtre, a critique of capitalism devoted to the super-rich and the world of luxury. Once again crowned, he joined the closed circle of eight filmmakers who won two Palmes d'Or.

The Cannes Film Festival is considered one of the biggest film festivals in the world, alongside the Berlinale in Berlin and the Venice Film Festival. During their last edition, these two festivals appointed two women to head their jury, Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore respectively. The last female president of the Cannes jury dates back to 2018, with Australian Cate Blanchett.
