Evening Update Friday 8 November

The SOS Medecins emergency doctor service have announced that they are suspending operations in the Moulins area of Nice. The move comes after a doctor from the service was assaulted while attending a call in the area late last night. The doctor was beaten and had her watch and personal belongings taken in the attack.

A march is being held in Marseille tomorrow to demonstrate against poor housing. According to housing organization the Abbé Pierre Foundation, in the whole of France there are currently 1.3 million people in housing which threatens their health and safety. The rental of substandard housing may soon be banned by mayors in France. An amendment to a bill being considered by deputies which would allow mayors to ban the rental of unhealthy housing comes a year after the tragedy of the rue d’Aubagne in Marseille in which 8 people lost their lives.

The CGT-Cheminots railway union has called for a strike on the 5th of December to protest at pension reforms. Several other train unions have also called for a strike on the same day.

Three people have been seriously injured in a car accident in Saint-Maximin this afternoon. Reports say that two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on the RD 560. Two helicopters were used to transport the injured to hospital.

It’s been announced that Rue Bonaparte in Nice will become permanently pedestrianized from the 1st of December. The road has been closed to traffic on Fridays and Saturdays as part of a test since June. As from the 1st of December the only vehicles allowed will be delivery vehicles and vehicles with a permit, which will have access from 5am to 11am.

French Public Accounts minister Gérald Darmanin has announced a 1 billion euro renovation programme for 39 administrative cities. The sum includes 37 million euros to be spent on projects in Toulon, including the renovation of administrative offices.

Toulon Hyères airport has announced that flights to Frankfurt will begin next year. The airline Condor will be operating three flights per week next summer.

Amateur cyclists have registered to take part in the Tour de France. On the 5th of July 2020, 16,000 amateur cyclists will cycle 177km in the hills behind Nice. Much to the delight of local cyclists the opportunity is not to be missed with some even signing up the whole family to take part in the Tour.

 

BUSINESS

Thomas Cook's UK airport slots at Gatwick and Bristol have been sold to Easyjet, according to the Official Receiver. The sale price was £36m and the Official Receiver said this was the first sale of the collapsed tour operator's airport slots. EasyJet said that at Gatwick Airport it has acquired 12 summer slot pairs and eight winter slot pairs and at Bristol Airport it has six summer slot pairs and one winter slot pair. It says there will be more information when it presents its financial results later this month.

Inter Ikea, which owns the flatpack store brand, has reported a 5% rise in annual profits. The firm is investing heavily in new store formats in response to the shift to online shopping.

In London, Crossrail has said that it will not open until 2021. It was originally supposed to open in December 2018. Mark Wild, Crossrail chief executive described the project as "hugely complex" and said it must be completed to "the highest safety and quality standards."

IAG, the owner of British Airways, has issued its traffic numbers for October. About 10.3 million passengers travelled with the airline in the month, a rise of 3.4% on the same period last year.

Carmaker Honda has said its profit in the July to September quarter fell by 6.7% from a year earlier. The company also reduced its full-year after-tax profit forecast.

In the UK, Royal Mail is seeking a High Court injunction to stop a postal strike, claiming that a ballot of workers had "potential irregularities". Members of the Communications Workers Union last month voted in favour of a nationwide strike, saying the company had failed to keep to an employment deal agreed last year. No dates for a strike have yet been set.

 

SPORT

Cricket... England have beaten New Zealand by 76 runs in Napier. Dawid Malan hit the fastest T20 century by an England batsman. England have now levelled the five-match series with one game remaining. The final match takes place in Auckland on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Australia have beaten Pakistan by 10 wickets in their International Twenty20 match at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Australia were 109 for no loss in reply to Pakistan's 106 for 8.

Rugby Union... England have announced a two-Test tour of Japan next summer. England will play Japan in Oita on 4 July and in Kobe on 11 July.

Football...... Michael O'Neill has been appointed as manager of Stoke City. He will take over at Stoke immediately but will manage Northern Ireland for their final two qualifiers and any play-off in March.

In the English Premier League this weekend there’s one game tonight with Norwich playing Watford. On Saturday Chelsea play Crystal Palace. Burnley host West Ham. Newcastle play Bournemouth. Southampton face Everton. Spurs play Sheffield United and Leicester play Arsenal. On Sunday Manchester United play Brighton. Wolves host Aston Villa and Liverpool play Manchester City.
