Evening Update Fri 14 July

President Macron is meeting with families of victims of last years attack after attending an afternoon of tribute to the victims. He was joined by former President Nicolas Sarkosy, and several government ministers. The French scooterist who tried to stop the truck driver on the night, without regard to his own safety, was presented the Knight of the Legion of Honour by Christian Estrosi. Also attending this afternoon were Prince Albert of Monaco, as was rock singer Bono from U2, who has a home on the Riviera, and was caught up in the attack last year.

President Macron arrived in Nice after attending Bastille Day ceremonies in Paris this morning, which closed with the ‘Nizza la Bella’ being played on the Champs Elysees.

Areas of Nice around Place Masséna and the Promenade are under the tightest security as thousands join the special day of commemoration. Place Messéna is filled to capacity with an estimated 20,000 watching on giant screens nearby.

The afternoons ceremonies will be followed this evening by a concert of music by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir of the Opera. Then at 10.34pm, a minutes silence will be observed before 86 powerful lights will shine directly into the sky on the Promenade.

Trams, buses and traffic are severely restricted in the area, however TER train services remain unaffected and motorists are encouraged to use the A8 motorway if possible where there is no toll at the Nice St Izadore payage.

BUSINESS

US banking giant JP Morgan Chase has reported a 13% rise in second quarter profits to $7bn. The bank said loans and deposits continued to grow strongly, helping to offset a weaker performance at its financial market operations. Meanwhile, rival bank Citigroup reported a 5% fall in quarterly profits to $3.9bn. It blamed higher costs and taxes, as well as increased costs for bad loans.

EasyJet has announced it is setting up a new company in Austria to protect its European business after Britain leaves the EU. The new airline, EasyJet Europe, will be based in Vienna, as it must have an air operator certificate in an EU member country to allow it to continue flying between member states. The carrier said nothing will change from the perspective of passengers, and that all the staff and planes working for EasyJet Europe were already employed and based in the other 27 EU countries.
