The five men arrested in Menton during the anti-terrorist operation on Tuesday have reportedly left the Riviera for Paris.  It’s believed the men were taken from the Auvare Barracks in Nice to Nice Cote d’Azur Airport for a flight to the capital where investigations will continue.

 

The body of a 17 year old girl has been found in front of a hotel in Cannes. Worried passers by alerted police and an autopsy is to be carried out in the coming days. Police say they are unable to determine with certainty the exact circumstances which led to the young girl’s death as there were no signs of apparent injury.


MonacoTech, an innovative start up incubator and accelerator, has been launched in the Principality.  In attendance for the launch were Prince Albert II of Monaco, Jean Castellini – Monaco’s Finance and Economy Minister – and well known French entrepreneur Xavier Niel. MonacoTech is already hosting 15 startups in it’s 800 square metres of space.


It’s been announced that for the first time in France, the international Red Bull Air Race is to take place in Cannes next year. The event organized by Red Bull is a very special kind of race which will see aircraft fly between 25 and 30 meters above sea level in the bay of Cannes, between Port Canto  and the heliport lighthouse. The organisers hope to attract 100,000 spectators over three days from 20 to 22 April.


Police are appealing for information regarding a missing British man who may be in the South of France.  Bernard Ross, who is 51 years old used to be director of TV at the football body Uefa in Nyon, Switzerland.  He suffers from bipolar disorder, is a fluent French speaker and was seen in Marseilles on the 22nd of October and in Grasse on 31st of October.  Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Mr Ross is asked to contact Thames Valley Police in the UK or to contact Interpol.

US competition authorities have reportedly demanded the sale of CNN as a condition of approving the $85bn merger of Time Warner and AT&T.  The proposed deal would combine AT&T’s position as one of the largest providers of cable TV in the US with Time Warner's entertainment assets.

Burberry has announced that it’s planning to close an unspecified number of non-luxury stores. The company said it had reduced costs by £20m.  Burberry’s half-year results revealed that sales had risen 4% and operating profits were up by 24% to £127m, but the company’s shares fell significantly on the news.

 

SPORT

 

CRICKET… England have suffered another injury setback after Jake Ball sprained his ankle in a warm-up game.  England team management said that his condition would be assessed overnight. The Cricket Australia XI made 233-9 declared, before England reached 5 for no loss, a lead of 65.

RUGBY UNION… The squad has been announced for England’s match against Argentina on Saturday.  Henry Slade will be at inside centre, with the two Lions players Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje rested.
Jonathan Joseph, Courtney Lawes and Elliot Daly are also included in the line-up.
Head coach Eddie Jones said that it was England’s best 23 selected and that it was their most important game this year.
