There have been two fires in buildings in our region this morning. In Vallauris an apartment caught fire on the avenue Pablo-Picasso. The apartment was unoccupied but the fire apparently spread to several floors of the complex. Reports say that four firefighters were hospitalised as a result of smoke inhalation. Meanwhile, thirteen people were evacuated from their houses after a fire broke out in a house in Sospel. The house was near the fire station and firefighters were quickly on the scene. There are no reports of injuries.
In Antibes, the first buildings are being demolished as part of the modernisation of the Marenda-Lacan area between the port and the old town. The development will reportedly provide 200 housing units, many new shops and restaurants and a new cinema complex.
A total of 45 people have lost their lives on the roads of the Alpes Maritimes this year, which is 10 more deaths than at this point in 2016. There have been several deaths on the department’s roads this week, including a 16 year old cyclist.
IN FRENCH NATIONAL NEWS…The CGT union has called for a new national day of action on the 21st of September. The day of action will involve strikes and demonstrations. The day of action on the 12th of September, organised by the CGT, the FSU and Unef and Solidaires, is still planned to take place.
The credit report company Equifax has said that about 143 million of it’s customers may have had information compromised in a cyber security breach. Equifax said the data included Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses, mostly of US, but also some UK and Canadian customers were affected. The company's core consumer and commercial credit databases were not accessed.
The UK's manufacturing output increased by 0.5% in July, according to new figures. However, separate data indicated that there was little change in the UK's trade deficit during July.
