Evening Update 6 Sept 2017

The Prefecture has warned of a severe risk of forest fires in the Var region. Les Monts Toulonnais, the Corniche des Maures and the Isles of Hyères in the Var have all been placed on a severe fire risk. The Prefecture of the Var announced that due to the extremely dry weather conditions and lack of rain, forest areas in the region are closed to the public.

Representative of the CGT Union has been present at several public buildings in Nice today to explain what they say is “the breakdown in public services” and to oppose the proposed new employment laws. Demonstrations against the new laws are still planned for the 12th of September.  The union has called for railway workers to strike on the 12th.

A 13 year old boy is being treated in the Lenval Hospital in Nice after an accident in the sea off Beaulieu sur Mer.  He was reportedly injured by a harpoon arrow during underwater fishing.

Anti-terrorist police have raided an apartment in the Val-de-Marne Department near Paris today. Two men have been arrested after parts to make explosives were discovered in the apartment.

Hurricane Irma has caused severe damage and flooding on several French island territories in the Caribbean. According to French Interior Minister, Gérard Collomb, the four "most solid" buildings on Saint Martin in the Leeward Islands, have been destroyed. Power cuts have disrupted communications.


The International Air Transport Association has released figures which show that air travel rose 6.8% in July from the same month last year. The Association said that demand continues to be very strong.

The Australian economy grew by 0.8% in the second quarter of this year, up from 0.3% in the first quarter. Australia has now clocked up a record 26 years without a recession.

German industrial orders fell unexpectedly in July. According to Germany’s federal statistics authority Destatis, new orders decreased by 0.7% month-on-month in July. Orders from inside Germany fell 1.6% ,those from other eurozone countries were down 1.0%, but contracts from outside the Eurozone increased by 0.6%.


CRICKET…. England have replaced Chris Woakes with Toby Roland-Jones for the third Test against West Indies. The test starts tomorrow at Lords and is England’s last test before they go into battle against Australia to retain the Ashes.

FOOTBALL… Transfer news, Fifa has reportedly rejected Leicester City's application to register Adrien Silva because the club missed the deadline by a mere 14 seconds. As a result, Silva is ineligible until January. Leicester are appealing the decision. The player previously played for Sporting Lisbon before being signed to Leicester for 22 million pounds.
