A 24 year old woman is in a serious condition in hospital after a car collision near the Polygone Riviera shopping centre in Cagnes sur Mer yesterday evening. Another woman, aged 25, and a 51 year old man also suffered injuries in the collision.
Meteo France has confirmed that the summer of 2017 was one of the hottest on record. It’s been the third-warmest summer in 75 years with a number of records broken in the valleys behind Nice. In addition to the high temperatures, it’s never rained so little since the creation of the weather station in Nice in 1942.
The Saudi Arabian air acrobatic team, the country’s equivalent of the UK’s Red Arrows, arrived at Nice airport yesterday for a stopover on their way to an air show in Belgium. The visit was to deal with technical matters. The acrobatic team took off from Nice again this lunchtime and were visible over a wide area as they turned on their smoke trails as a show of thanks.
IN FRENCH NATIONAL NEWS...French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced reforms to the rules governing self-employed workers. The measures will start on 1 January 2018. There will be a transitional phase of a maximum of two years. The reforms expected to affect over six million French workers.
A French court has today awarded The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge 100,000 euros in damages after a magazine printed topless pictures of the Duchess in 2012.The court ruled that the photographs were an invasion of privacy.
Danish toymaker Lego has announced that it is to reduce its number of employees by about 8 per cent, amounting to 1,400 people. The company said the business had become an increasingly complex organization and needed what it called a “reset” after double digit growth over the past five years.
South Africa’s economy has emerged from recession, growing 2.5 per cent in the second quarter. However, in July South Africa’s central bank said that growth for the full year was expected to be only 0.5 per cent. Unemployment is at nearly 28 per cent.
In the United States, jet engine manufacturer UTC has announced that it’s acquiring aircraft parts maker Rockwell Collins for 30 billion dollars, making it one of the largest acquisitions ever to take place in the aviation sector.
FOOTBALL…The manager of Atletico Madrid Diego Simeone has signed a two-year contract extension. He is the longest-serving La Liga manager at the moment, having been appointed back in 2011.

HORSE RACING… The appeals body of the Irish Turf Club has handed jockey Davy Russell a four-day ban after he punched his horse on the back of the head. The incident happened just before a race at Tramore on 18 August. They found Russell to be in breach of Rule 272 in that he "acted in a way that was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horse racing".
