Evening Update 4 Sept 2017

A man has died after being rescued from the sea off Ramatuelle last night.  He had been struck by the propellers of a boat. According to reports, the boat had apparently been rented by three young people in Port Grimaud earlier in the day. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Two people have been taken to hospital in Nice in a critical condition following an accident on the Promenade des Anglais. The accident occurred in the early hours of this morning in front of the Palais de la Méditerranée when a scooter collided with a pedestrian. Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A man has been arrested for his alleged role in a fight outside a nightclub in Saint Laurent du Var.  The fight resulted in one man being hospitalized after being attacked with a broken bottle. The police have launched an investigation.

IN FRENCH NATIONAL NEWS…According to a French public prosecutor a man has been charged with kidnapping and placed in provisional detention in connection with the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl during a wedding in the Alps. Maelys de Araujo was last seen in the early hours of Sunday August 27 at a wedding being held in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a village some 50 kilometres north of Grenoble.


In China, over 1.8 million Volkswagen cars are being recalled. The country’s watchdog said the recall would affect vehicles made by VW and its two Chinese joint ventures with SAIC and FAW. The recall concerns a faulty fuel pump which may cause cars to stall.

In the UK, the latest edition of a regular survey of the construction industry has shown a slight  slowdown in the sector.   The Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers Index fell to 51.1 in August from 51.9 in July.  The figure is the lowest for a year. However, a figure over 50 still indicates expansion.



FOOTBALL…La Liga, the Spanish football league, has asked UEFA to investigate Manchester City. The league’s president said that what he called Manchester City’s “funding by state aid” distorts European competitions.  
Tonight in the World Cup Qualifiers,England play Slovakia in Group F with Scotland at home to Malta, while in Group C, Northern Ireland can guarantee a play-off place if they beat the Czech Republic in Belfast.

CYCLING… Chris Froome has been named on Great Britain's longlist the Road World Championships in Norway in a couple of weeks time.  The 13 man list also includes British road and time trial champion Steve Cummings and former world champion Mark Cavendish.

GOLF…. Portland Classic tournament winner Stacy Lewis has donated her prize money to the flood victims in Houston.  The American player beat South Korea's Chun In-gee by one shot to take the trophy.  Lewis said “We're going to be able to help people rebuild houses and get their homes back. That's more important than any win,"
