The first tourist figures for the summer season have been released. Despite fears that last year’s Nice attack would lead to a reduced number of visitors this year, the figures show that the number of visitors is up, but not to the high figures seen in some previous years. In July, the average occupancy of hotels and residences reached 80%, which is up three per cent from July last year. Overnight stays increased by 5%. The figures show August had an average occupancy of more than 90% for the urban hotel industry, which is up 6 per cent
A search is continuing for an elderly lady who disappeared from her home in Callas in the Var on Sunday afternoon. 84 year old Yvonne Rivaud suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. A dog team and a helicopter joined the search yesterday afternoon but with no results.
IN NATIONAL NEWS…President Emmanuel Macron has said that the fight against Islamist terrorism is his first priority. He said that France and its partners would have to invest in the reconstruction of both Syria and Iraq and that defeating the so-called Islamic State in those two countries must go hand in hand with anti-terrorism measures in Africa.
The euro has hit 1.20 against the dollar today for the first time since January 2015. The dollar has been weakened by trader’s belief that the impact of Hurricane Harvey and continuing tensions with North Korea will make a US interest rate rise less likely. The euro itself has been gaining against a range of currencies recently.
The UK government has announced proposed new corporate governance laws which will require about 900 listed companies to publish the pay ratio between management and workers. The new laws, which are due to come into effect by June next year, have been attacked by union bosses as “feeble” and have been criticised by the opposition Labour Party.
