The Prefecture of the Alpes Maritimes has issued restrictions on the sale and use of fireworks over the New Year. The sale of fireworks is banned from the 30th December to the 2nd January inclusive. The possession or use of fireworks in public places is also banned between those dates. The Prefecture says that the restrictions have been put in place for reasons of public order.
The man who allegedly stabbed his wife in front of their 3 children on Christmas Day has been charged with intentional homicide by prosecutors in Toulon. It’s reported that the 3 children are now being looked after by their grandparents. The man was remanded in custody following the hearing.
Recent figures have shown an increase in unemployment of 0.5% in the last year in the Provence Alpes Côtes d’Azur region. The news comes as French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he expects his flagship labour reforms to produce major results in terms of creating new jobs in France by mid-2019. Since Macron's election, unemployment has dipped to around 9.6 percent - still about twice that of Britain or Germany and well above the European average of 7.8 percent.
Junction 42 of the A8 motorway has been closed in the direction of Italy for most of this afternoon after a concrete mixer overturned. An operation has been underway to remove the concrete mixer with heavy lifting equipment. Fortunately the driver was able to get out quickly and reportedly only has slight injuries.

One of France's most-wanted jihadists has reportedly been captured by Kurdish fighters in Syria. Thomas Barnouin was captured about 10 days ago in north-eastern Syria with two other French nationals. He is believed to be linked to a jihadist cell that included Mohamed Merah, who murdered seven people in the Toulouse area in 2012.
Regulatory filings in the United States have revealed that Apple’s boss, Tim Cooke, was paid 102 million dollars this year. Most of that amount was made up of a share bonus based on the company’s stock market performance.
South Korea’s government has announced that it’s taking several steps to combat speculation in cryptocurrencies. The authorities reportedly say they will introduce a ban on opening anonymous cryptocurrency accounts and introduce new legislation to give regulators powers to close certain virtual exchanges.
CRICKET… Alastair Cook has made the highest score by a visiting batsman at the MCG. Cook was on 244 not out, beating the previous record of 208 made by West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards. England finished the day on 491-9, a lead of 164.
TENNIS…Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Brisbane International tennis tournament with an ongoing knee injury. Nadal had already pulled out of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi this weekend but says he still intends to play at the Australian Open.
FOOTBALL.. Swansea City have appointed former Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal as their new permanent manager. He joins Swansea initially until the end of the season with the option of an extension. Swansea sacked Paul Clement just before Christmas and the club is currently bottom of the Premiership.
