Migrants
The Alpes-Maritimes region does not receive the most migrants in France. Figures released today show 11,000 migrants entered the country so far this year, but the PACA region is in fifth position for migrant registrations, after Auvergne Rhône Alpes, Aquitaine, Grand Est and Occi.tan.ie.

 

Banned
French authorities have discovered over 140 cosmetic products containing banned substances. Products on the list, include an eye treatment by L'Oréal, a sun cream for kids by Lovea and hair gel from Vivelle. Moves are being made to pull the products from shelves across France.

 

Restaurant
A 38 year-old woman is recovering in hospital after suffering 20% burns in a restaurant kitchen last night. The incident happened as the woman, employed at ‘O Sole Mio’ restaurant in Menton, leaned against a stove, and her shirt caught fire. She was airlifted to St Anne’s Hospital in Toulon, where she is expected to make a full recovery.

 

Clocks
Homeowners have been warned to expect a spike in burglaries this weekend as the clocks go back one hour on Saturday night. Police explained that criminals, also take advantage of the extra hour of darkness, to break into homes. Police are also alerting the public, that roads are set to become more dangerous, especially with cyclists, who are the most likely to be invisible in the darker rush hours next week.

BUSINESS

Companie Monegasque de Banque has hosted the first Philanthropy Academy in Monaco this week, in response to a growing demand from clients in the principality. CMB, who specialise in investment advice, will use the academy to shed light on topics such as taxation, specific to philanthropic actions.

 

The US economy expanded at an annual pace of 3% during the last quarter, which was stronger than expected. Analysts had expected a sharper slowdown, after back-to-back hurricanes battered several states during the quarter.

 

Billions of euros of British taxpayers' money could remain locked in an EU bank for more than thirty years after Brexit. The European Investment Bank, in which the UK is a 16% shareholder, said the UK would not be fully repaid until 2054. They described Brexit as a travesty but denied the move was a punishment.

SPORT

Rugby
At the World Cup in Melbourne, England suffered their 12th consecutive defeat, against defending champions Australia, in the opening game of the contest. With five minutes remaining, there were only six points between the sides, in a closely fought game. Tomorrow, Wales face Papua New Guinea, and on Sunday, Ireland play Italy, France take on Lebanon and Scotland face Tonga.

 

Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton says he wants to win his fourth Drivers Championship the right way, by coming first at Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver only needs to finish fifth, to clinch the title, but says he wants to show he’s capable in every race.

 

Tennis
France's Caroline Garcia produced a stunning fightback against Caroline Wozniacki to reach the WTA Finals last four, at the expense of world number one Simona Halep. Garcia recovered from a desperate first set to beat Wozniacki Luv-6 6-3 7-5. In her semi-final tomorrow, Garcia will take on Venus Williams.
