Evening Update 22 Sept

EasyJet - Three members of an Easyjet crew were taken to Pasteur Hospital last night after an unidentified odour gave all three severe headaches during a flight  to Nice from Berlin. The plane was examined for possible carbon monoxide poisoning, but found to be clear.

Robbery - Police are investigating the heist of a cigarette lorry near Marseilles. In the early hours of this morning, two cars chased the lorry, one stopping in front, the other behind, forcing the driver to stop. Gunmen ordered the driver from his seat, and drove off with the lorry, which was later found burnt out minus its cargo.

Labour - President Macron has signed into law, sweeping changes to France's complex labour code, to encourage hiring, and cure France's stubbornly high unemployment rate, which stands at roughly twice that of Britain or Germany. Although many agree the changes will boost France's competitiveness, it could also fail to improve employees' working conditions. France’s largest and most militant union, the CGT, has vowed to continue recent strike action, to protest the changes.

Train - Nice-Ville train station was closed for a full hour during the ‘morning rush’ today. The reason was a suspect package which closed the station between 8 & 9am.

Cold - Meteó France has confirmed that this month has been an unusually cold one along the Cote d’Azur, with temperatures an average four degrees below normal. The last time we had such a dramatic turn in the weather was seven years ago in 2010.


The eurozone economy ended the third quarter of the year on a strong note, according to the latest PMI Purchasing Managers' Index. The survey shows business activity during September, saw one of its strongest gains for the past six years, and that the next quarter would register strong manufacturing growth as well.

Ride share firm, Uber, has lost its licence to carry passengers in London. Transport for London said it would not renew the licence, on grounds of public safety and security, especially in relation to background checks on drivers. Uber say they will appeal the decision.

The world’s richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt, the heiress to cosmetics firm L'Oreal, has died aged 94. She leaves a fortune estimated at 33bn euro.


AS Monaco take on Lille tonight in Northern France. Monaco are the side Lille are least looking forward to playing at the moment, with the home side just a point above the relegation, after just one win from their first six games. Much has been expected of new coach Marcelo Bielsa, but so far, his appointment has not had the desired effect. Despite this, AS Monaco manager Leonardo Jardim is not counting his chickens, saying that it’s always something to face a team coached by Marcelo.  Kick-off in Lille is at 8.45

OGC Nice are hoping to improve their disastrous start to the season in their match tonight against Angers SCO. The two sides have met seven times in the past, and are pretty evenly matched, with Nice scoring three wins over Angers two. However, bookies have Nice as the odds on winner for tonights game, which kicks off at Allianz Riviera at 7pm.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar have all been nominated for Best FIFA Male Player of the Year. Ronaldo won the inaugural award last year, ahead of Messi, with Neymar fourth behind Atletico's Antoine Griezmann. The winner will be announced on October 23rd.

Formula 1
Next month's Mexican Grand Prix will go ahead as planned, despite the earthquake that hit the city on Tuesday. The announcement was made after a track inspection showed no damage to the road surface or buildings.
